José Luis Azuaje Ayala

José Luis Azuaje Ayala (born December 6, 1957 in Valera ) is a Venezuelan clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Maracaibo .

Life

José Luis Azuaje Ayala was ordained a priest on May 5, 1984 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on March 18, 1999 auxiliary bishop in Barquisimeto and titular bishop of Italica . He was ordained episcopate on May 29th of the same year by the Bishop of Trujillo , Vicente Ramón Hernández Peña ; Co- consecrators were Tulio Manuel Chirivella Varela , Archbishop of Barquisimeto, and Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo , Archbishop of Merida .

On July 15, 2006, he was appointed Bishop of El Vigía-San Carlos del Zulia and on September 23 of the same year he was appointed to the office.

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Barinas on August 30, 2013 . In January 2018 he was elected President of the Bishops' Conference of Venezuela . He is also President of Caritas Latin America . On May 24, 2018, the Pope appointed him Archbishop of Maracaibo.
