Life

JH Pitscheider was born in Brixen in 1923 of Ladin descent. He grew up in simple family relationships. His father Engelbert Pitscheider (* 1882 in Abbey , † 1931 in Brixen) was a nurse in the local sanatorium and his mother Ida Flöß (* 1890 in St. Martin , † 1974 in Brixen) was a cook. Even as a child, JH Pitscheider showed a great talent for drawing; an artistic training was not possible for him at that time. At the age of 17 he was drafted into military service, was captured during the Battle of El Alamein and was transferred to British Columbia ( Canada ). During his four-year stay as a prisoner of war, the autodidact Pitscheider had the opportunity to work with various artists from Düsseldorf , Munich and Vienna , to deal intensively with painting and to try out various painting techniques.

After his release in 1946, more than 100 of his drawings and oil paintings were brought to Europe by the International Red Cross and exhibited for the first time in Geneva . He himself returned to Brixen, where he started a civil service career. During this time he made contact with the painter Josef Telfner, who lived in Gufidaun , and his painter friend Herbert Weihrauter (1892–1977). After his retirement, Pitscheider devoted himself entirely to painting and hunting.
