life and work

He was the son of the farmer Franz Lappe and his wife Theresia Schupmann. After his Abitur (1899) on the school Theodorianum in Paderborn enrolled himself Lappe in October 1900 at the University Friedrich-Wilhelms-Rheinische to Bonn and received his doctorate there in 1903 with the dissertation The philosophy of Nicholas of Autrecourt Dr. phil. At the legal and Political Science Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University at Münster he received his doctorate in 1907 with his work The Geseker Huden Dr. rer. pole. Finally, he received his doctorate in 1920 at the same faculty with his dissertation Die Wüstungen der Provinz Westfalen as Dr. jur. utr. He received his doctorate three times.

From 1907 he was a teacher, most recently a senior teacher at the Progymnasium in Lünen (Westphalia) (later: Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium ). Politically, he was a candidate for the German Democratic Party (DDP) in 1919 . A short time later he joined the SPD and in 1923 became a city councilor in Lünen. However, he resigned his mandate as early as 1925 and since then has devoted himself increasingly to research into Westphalian history, to which he had dedicated himself many years earlier. For this he was inspired at a young age by his uncle, the “old councilor” Ludwig Schupmann (1851–1920).

In the field of research into Westphalian history, he gained supraregional importance. His professional career (including studying theology and philosophy at the Episcopal Philosophical-Theological Training Institute, Paderborn and at the Royal Bavarian Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich from 1899–1900) enabled him to achieve exceptional academic achievements. First he turned to his doctoral thesis Die Geseker Huden to research the history of his hometown Geseke. Most of Lappe's works and works were created during his time in Lüner. Research into the history of the city about Lünen cannot do without his profound knowledge and insights. Another focus of his historical research was the person of the baron Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein . In 1920 his book Freiherr vom Stein appeared as a manor on Kappenberg . He published many essays and articles in magazines and anniversary publications. Genealogical research , combined with historical treatises on deserted villages , Schnadegänge , road and place names , inscriptions house, city fortifications , militia and protecting nature as well as works on industrial pioneers of the early days round out its extensive work. His comprehensive work on the Spemannhof in Rheinen near Schwerte an der Ruhr, completed in 1943, remained unpublished.

His critical attitude towards the National Socialists - he was part of the resistance against National Socialism - led to considerable conflicts during the time of National Socialism . This resulted in his suspension and early discharge from school service. Lappe moved to Münster, later back to his hometown Geseke. It was here in 1944 that he was informed that the National Socialists wanted to take him to a concentration camp . Lappe then traveled with his family to Dotternhausen to see the relatives of his son-in-law. Shortly after arriving there, he died on March 6, 1944 of a facial rose .

Josef Lappe found his final resting place in the cemetery of his hometown Geseke.
