Josef Seehofer (born March 31, 1896 in Nenningen ; † March 8, 1982 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) was a Swabian and Roman Catholic priest and local researcher .

Life

He completed his school days at the Untergymnasium in Bad Mergentheim and the Obergymnasium in Ehingen an der Donau . In 1915 he was accepted into the episcopal Konvikt Wilhelmsstift to study theology in Tübingen , which he interrupted in May 1915 to do military service, first as a volunteer nurse, then until the end of the First World War as a soldier in an infantry regiment . In the war he was severely wounded once, received several military awards and attained the rank of non-commissioned officer . He completed his studies, which he resumed after the war, in 1922, whereupon he was ordained a priest . Seehofer subsequently held positions as vicar and chaplain in Aalen , Lauterburg , Ellenberg and Herbertingen . From 1927 to 1934 he worked as a pastor in Burgberg , then until 1954 in Bargau and then until 1964 in Sulmingen near Biberach . In 1964 he retired and in 1967 moved to Schwäbisch Gmünd , where he lived until his death.

Create

As a person interested in local history, Seehofer developed extensive local history research, especially as a retired worker, which resulted in numerous publications . In these he described the history of his place of birth and also made many of his places of activity with the neighboring places the subject of historiographical descriptions. Until shortly before his death he was still working on a local history of Rechberg near Schwäbisch Gmünd, which he could no longer complete.

Josef Seehofer's commitment and work in Bargau was honored there in 1976 by naming a street after him. In the same year he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. Among other things, his courageous behavior in the service of family members of opponents of the Nazi dictatorship , his advocacy for a peaceful handover of Bargau to the US military at the end of the Second World War and the acceptance of a large refugee family in the rectory despite the acute housing shortage in the immediate post-war period were honored .
