Josef Welzel (born February 27, 1927 in Biebersdorf , Glatz district , Lower Silesia Province ; † August 12, 2014 in Hadamar ) was a German experimental archaeologist , glass cutter , engraver and educator .

Life

From 1941 to 1944 Josef Welzel completed an apprenticeship as a glass cutter in neighboring Rückers , which he completed with a journeyman's examination. He was then drafted into military service. After the end of the Second World War in 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he could no longer return to his Silesian homeland. In 1948 he got a job as a glass cutter in Niedermarsberg and Euskirchen . From 1949 to 1951 he attended the glass school in Rheinbach , which he completed with the specialist examination to become an engraver . He then practiced as a glass grinder at Villeroy & Boch in Wadgassen and at Ceralys in Paris. At the same time he was a student of the master classes of Konrad Habermeier and Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg at the state higher technical school in Schwäbisch Gmünd , which he completed with the master's examination as an engraver. Then he was a guest student with Konrad Habermeier and Anton Mahringer until 1956 and then until 1963 in the studio of the sculptor Fritz Nuss . In addition, he worked from 1952 to 1963 as a master glass engraver in the Schwäbisch Gmünder Josephinenhütte. From 1963 to 1992 Josef Welzel was a specialist teacher for glass design at the State Glass College in Hadamar, where he continued to work until 2006. Welzel died on August 12, 2014 at the age of 87.

Achievements and Awards

Through intensive study, Josef Welzel was the first to reproduce the double-walled Roman slide glasses, the method of manufacture of which was no longer known for a long time.

As early as 1959, his first sculptural glass works were exhibited in the annual exhibition of the Baden-Württemberg Art Association. 1968 to 1973 he created designs for pressed glass vases and bowls for the Charlottenhütte in Werdohl , 1977 to 1978 plastic glass works for the Wiesenthalhütte in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

In 1977 Josef Welzel was awarded the Ilse Reinhart Foundation Prize for his glass work. In 2009 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.
