Joseph August Bissinger (born December 18, 1814 in Mannheim , Grand Duchy of Baden , † May 19, 1851 there ) was a German landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Bissinger was the youngest of three sons of the Mannheim wine and diner Karl Bissinger (1780-1847) and his wife Katharina, née Ludin (1782-1836). His sister Anna (1818-1893) married the lawyer and liberal politician Alexander von Soiron in 1840 .

According to the wishes of his parents, he became a businessman after a high school education and worked as a representative of various trading houses from 1834 in Koblenz , Antwerp , Épernay and Paris . In his free time he occupied himself with painting , to which he had already devoted himself as an adolescent and as a commercial apprentice, especially through the acquaintance of a Mannheim stage painter, in whose workshop he frequented and began to familiarize himself with artistic techniques and subjects. In 1830 he took private lessons with the history and landscape painter Carl Friedrich Lessing in Düsseldorf . In addition, after the death of his mother, who had always rejected painting as her youngest child's career, he took lessons from the landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek in Kleve from 1836 onwards . In 1844 Bissinger gave up his commercial activity and became a full-time landscape painter. Study trips took him to Salzburg and Tyrol , and also to Italy ( Rome ). In 1845 he joined Koekkoek's studio in Kleve for a few months. As a freelance artist, he also lived in various other places, such as in Munich , Mannheim, Frankfurt and from 1848 temporarily returned to Dusseldorf, where he from Johann Wilhelm Schirmer was mentor and 1850/51 the Association of Artists Malkasten belonged. In August 1849 he fell seriously ill. Because of " breaking blood " he was looking for relaxation in the mild climate of Weinheim . In 1850 he returned from there terminally ill to his hometown Mannheim, where he died the following year at the age of 36.

In the Romantic style, Bissinger painted landscapes of the Harz , Taunus and Bergisches Land , of wooded slopes on the Bergstrasse and of riverside landscapes on the Rhine , for example on the Lower Rhine , and of Italian mountains. Princess Augusta acquired a large landscape painting for Koblenz Castle .
