Josef Condrau

Josef "Giusep" Condrau (born January 16, 1894 in Disentis ; † October 6, 1974 there, entitled to live in Disentis, honorary citizen of Disentis and Trun ) was a Swiss journalist , publisher , media manager and politician ( CVP ).

Life

Condrau grew up as the eldest son of the Catholic-conservative politician Giachen Giusep (1864-1922), publisher and editor of the Gasetta Romontscha , in Disentis. He attended high schools in Disentis and Schwyz and studied law in Freiburg , Zurich and Bern . In 1932 he was at the University of Friborg with the dissertation The parliamentary bicameral system with special consideration of the Swiss Confederation doctorate . He was an honorary member of Romania, member of Alemannia , Fryburgia and Turicia .

Political career

From 1923 to 1957 he was Grisons Grand Councilor for the Disentis District (1930 Council President) and from 1933 to 1937 Mistral ( Landammann ) of the Disentis District. In 1942 he became President of the Conservative Democratic Party, from 1943 to 1948 he was President of the Conservative People's Party (today CVP) of the Canton of Graubünden . From 1935 to 1963 he was a member of the National Council and in 1957 President. He was a member of all 118 commissions, including all permanent ones.

With his interpellation in 1936 , Condrau initiated the political recognition of Rhaeto-Romanic as the fourth national language in the National Council , which was accepted with an overwhelming majority in the referendum of February 20, 1938. As the successor to Josef Escher , who was elected to the Federal Council , Condrau became the leader of the parliamentary group for the protection of the interests of the mountain population. B. used in the areas of agriculture law, financial equalization and livestock sales. From 1954 to 1960 he was President of the Conservative parliamentary group and, together with Secretary General Martin Rosenberg , played a key role in gaining the third Federal Council seat for the Conservatives as a transition to the creation of the magic formula of 1959. Condrau also served as president of the Vorderrhein district court, the Bündner Oberland electricity company and the Bündner Oberland farmers' association for around 20 years. From 1955 to 1968 he was chairman of the board of directors of Furka-Oberalp-Bahn . Condrau achieved great influence in his political career as a representative of the Surselva and the mountain regions.

Publishing career

After the death of his father, Condrau was the third generation owner and managing director of Stampa Romontscha Condrau SA from 1922 to 1972 and thus publisher and editor of Gasetta Romontscha in Disentis. From 1954 he was on the central board, from 1960 to 1971 President of the Swiss Association of Newspaper Publishers (today Association of Swiss Media). In 1974 he received the Premi radio e televisiun from Cuminanza Radio Rumantsch .

Private

Condrau was married to Lucrezia nee Durgiai from 1937 to 1957. His son Pius Condrau (1924–2013) was also the publisher of Gasetta Romontscha .
