Louis Guillaume Joseph Doutrelepont (also Josef Doutrelepont ; born June 3, 1834 in Malmedy , † April 30, 1918 in Bonn ) was a German surgeon and dermatologist .

Life

Joseph Doutrelepont studied medicine at the Universities of Bonn , Berlin and Vienna . In 1858 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . He then went to Bonn and became a student of the surgeon Wilhelm Busch . In 1863 he completed his habilitation, became a private lecturer in surgery and ophthalmology and gave lectures on syphilitic diseases , among other things . In 1869 he was appointed associate professor . He was also head of the surgical department ("conducting doctor") in the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Stift in Bonn. In 1870 he took part in the Franco-Prussian War as a surgeon and was awarded the Iron Cross .

From the beginning of the 1870s, Joseph Doutrelepont worked increasingly in the field of dermatology and in 1874 applied for the establishment of a dermatological clinic. In 1879 he founded a private clinic for syphilitic and skin diseases in the university building from his own resources. In 1882 a university clinic for skin diseases was approved and he took over the management. Joseph Doutrelepont was made a full honorary professor in 1894 in recognition of his achievements. In 1889 he founded the German Dermatological Society with Moriz Kaposi , Edmund Lesser , Albert Neisser and Philipp Josef Pick . In 1910 he retired , his successor was Erich Hoffmann .

Joseph Doutrelepont researched and taught in particular in the field of skin and venereal diseases , in particular the etiology and therapy of skin tuberculosis . Students were Johannes Fabry , who founded the Dermatology Clinic at the Dortmund Clinic in 1900 , Karl Grouven , who was later appointed to the University of Halle , and Maximilian Wolters , who was appointed to the University of Rostock . Albert Jesionek from the University of Giessen took up his work, especially on light therapy , and developed it further.

Joseph Doutrelepont was born in 1861 with Marie. Bettendorf (1840–1892), married.

Awards and honors

Joseph Doutrelepont was an honorary member of the Berlin Dermatological Society, the Rhenish-Westphalian Association of Dermatologists and the Lower Rhine Society for Natural and Medical Science.

In 1888 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, students of Joseph Doutrelepont had Albert Küppers make a bronze bust, which was set up in the University Dermatology Clinic in Bonn. An oil painting, also commissioned by students, hangs in a lecture hall of the dermatology clinic.
