Joseph Gelinek
Joseph Gelinek or Josef Gelinek (Czech Josef Jelínek ; born December 3, 1758 in Sedlec , Bohemia , † April 13, 1825 in Vienna ) was a Bohemian- Austrian composer and pianist.
Life
Joseph Gelinek attended the Jesuit college in Příbram and studied theology in Prague. Here he was also a student of Josef Seger . In 1786 he was ordained a priest and, through Mozart's mediation, got a job as chaplain and music teacher at the court of Count Philip Kinsky in Prague. As a piano teacher for the nobility, he met Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven in Vienna and became a pupil of Johann Georg Albrechtsberger .
The guitarist Wenzel Matiegka was one of Gelinek's students .
Gelinek was later in the service of Prince Joseph Kinsky and was appointed to the imperial court as a teacher. From 1818 "Abbé Gelinek" was the house chaplain and piano teacher in the palace of the Esterházy princes . In addition to more than a hundred series of variations on themes by Mozart , Beethoven and Weber , he composed piano sonatas, trios and violin sonatas.
His works were acclaimed by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and were so popular that other composers published works under his name.
Under the pseudonym Joseph Gelinek , a Spanish musicologist published the Beethoven crime thriller La Décima Sinfonía (German: The 10th Symphony , 2009) in 2008.
