Joseph Theodor Sigismund von Baczko (born December 1, 1751 in Goldap , † May 11, 1840 in Koppershagen , Wehlau district ) was a Prussian major general and head of the 7th Dragoon Regiment .

Life

His parents were the Prussian major Joseph Adolf von Baczko (* 1718, † 19 July 1793) and his wife Sophie Charlotte Dullo († 1781), the adopted daughter of the mayor of Goldap . The writer Ludwig von Baczko was his brother.

Military career

Baczko came in 1765 as a private corporal in the Dragoon Regiment No. 5 of the Prussian Army . There he became ensign on January 20, 1767 and second lieutenant on October 3, 1771 . In the War of the Bavarian Succession he took part in the battle near Zuckmantel. On January 30, 1780 he became an adjutant of the cavalry inspection of Lieutenant General Bülow. On December 2, 1786 he was promoted to captain of the cavalry. On September 4, 1788 he became an assistant in the Upper War College in the 2nd Department with a salary of 1200 thalers a year. He became a major on November 24, 1789 . On January 3, 1790, he was transferred to the 6th Dragoon Regiment and on June 14, 1790 appointed squadron chief. Baczko began on a cavalry regiment and received a gift of 500 thalers on April 1, 1792.

In 1794/95 he then took part in the campaign in Poland . On June 22, 1798 he rose to lieutenant colonel , and on September 25, 1798 he was appointed commander of the 7th Dragoon Regiment. On June 20, 1799 he was appointed colonel and on November 12, 1806 as head of the regiment. During the Fourth Coalition War , Baczko took part in the Battle of Preussisch Eylau and the battles of Schulitz, Biezun, Wackern, Diedersdorf and Heilsberg. On March 24, 1807, he was promoted to major general for his performance at Eylau. On July 18, 1807 he also received the order Pour le Mérite . On May 5, 1808, the Russian Tsar awarded Baczko with the Order of St. Anna 1st Class, as he was in command of the rearguard and rescued General Kamenskoi's infantry near Diedersdorf. By the end of the war, nine officers of the regiment received the order Pour le Mérite, 27 NCOs and men the medal of merit.

On September 7, 1808, he was then made inactive with salary. On June 30, 1812, he became the commandant of Tilsit and, from July 1, 1813, received a salary of 1000 thalers. On August 17, 1813, the salary was changed to a pension and Baczko received his farewell. He retired to the Koppershagen estate in the Wehlau district, which belonged to his son-in-law, where he died on May 11, 1840.

Baczko married on December 6, 1773 in Berlin Friederike Charlotte Auguste Feldmann (* December 6, 1773 - November 14, 1824, buried on November 18, 1824 at the Marienfriedhof in Berlin), a daughter of Privy Councilor Feldmann. The couple had several children including:
