Joseph Victor Adamec

Joseph Victor Adamec (born August 13, 1935 in Bannister , Gratiot County , Michigan , † March 20, 2019 in Hollidaysburg , Pennsylvania ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Altoona-Johnstown .

Life

The son of an immigrant miner from Slovakia studied journalism and foreign languages ​​at Michigan State University for two years . Encounters with the late Curia Cardinal Jozef Tomko gave the impetus for the decision to become a priest . He studied at the Pontifical Collegium Nepomucenum in Rome and obtained a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Lateran University .

The auxiliary bishop in Rome , Luigi Cardinal Traglia , ordained him on July 3, 1960 as a priest for the Slovak diocese of Nitra , the former home diocese of his parents.

After returning to the United States, he worked in his home diocese of Saginaw , where he was, among other things, Episcopal Secretary and Ceremonial and later Cancellarius Curiae . In 1977 Adamec became pastor and school chaplain in Bay City .

The Association of Slovak Catholics in the USA (Slovak Catholic Federation) elected him its President in 1971, an office which he held for 17 years. He was also a member of the Slovak League of America and the Knights of Columbus .

In 1980 Pope John Paul II awarded Adamec the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal and in 1985 he was awarded the honorary title of Pontifical Honorary Prelate

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown on March 12, 1987 . The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Jozef Tomko , ordained him episcopal on May 20th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were James John Hogan , Bishop Emeritus of Altoona-Johnstown, and Francis Frederick Reh , Bishop Emeritus of Saginaw .

On January 14, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
