Juan Antonio Menéndez Fernández (born January 6, 1957 in Villamarín , Asturias , Spain , † May 15, 2019 in León ) was a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Astorga .

Life

Juan Antonio Fernández Menéndez studied at the diocesan seminary of Oviedo and received on 10 May 1981 in Sacred Heart parish in Aviles , the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 2005 he graduated from the Pontifical University of Salamanca with a degree in canon law . Most recently Menéndez was pastor of the parish of St. Nicholas of Bari in Avilés, official and cathedral chapter in Oviedo. From 2001 to 2011 he was also vicar general .

On 26 April 2013 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Nasai and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Oviedo . The Archbishop of Oviedo, Jesús Sanz Montes OFM , donated him episcopal consecration on June 8th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Renzo Fratini , and the Senior Archbishop of Oviedo, Gabino Díaz Merchán .

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Astorga on November 18, 2015.

He died on May 15, 2019 in León.
