Juan de Cervantes
Juan de Cervantes (* around 1380 in Lora del Río , Spain , † November 25, 1453 in Seville ) was a Spanish cardinal of the 15th century .
Life
Until the cardinal's appointment
Juan de Cervantes studied theology as well as civil and canon law in Salamanca . The antipope Benedict (XIII) appointed him archdeacon of Calatrava in January 1415 . After falling out with the antipope, Pope Martin V granted him absolution ad cautelam . From 1419 he was procurator at the Roman Curia for the Kingdom of Castile . In 1423 he became canon of the cathedral chapter of Burgos . From 1423 to 1424 he took part in the Council of Siena and defended Martin V against the Aragonese participant Guillermo Agramunt .
Appointment of cardinals and Council of Basel
On May 24, 1426 Martin V accepted him as a cardinal priest of San Pietro in Vincoli to the college of cardinals . With his new title Juan de Cervantes received important and money-making benefits. In 1430 he became apostolic administrator of Tui , which he remained until 1438. He could not take part in the conclave of 1431 , but supported Cardinal Domenico Capranica .
In November 1432 he reached Basel to take part in the council there . In the following period he took the side of the council members and took an aggressive stance towards Pope Eugene IV . Due to his high reputation, he was chosen by the Council Fathers to be the sole judge in matters of faith in 1433, which he remained until 1434.
In 1435, however, he returned to Rome and became reconciled with the Pope. On his behalf, Cervantes again traveled to Basel the following year to push for an agreement with the Council Fathers.
From 1439
From 1439 Juan de Cervantes traveled all over Europe, staying near Basel, but staying away from the election of the antipope Felix V. In 1440 he celebrated the wedding mass of the future King Henry IV of Castile in Valladolid. In 1441 he became apostolic administrator of Segovia , then he was papal legate in Lombardy. In 1446 he became cardinal bishop of Ostia e Velletri and thus cardinal dean . In 1447 he did not take part in the conclave that Nicholas V elected. In 1449 he became Apostolic Administrator of Seville , which he remained until his death. Juan de Cervantes stayed there in the last years of his life and had a hospital built, among other things. He died in 1453 and was buried in the San Hermenegildo chapel that he built.
Others
In 1436, while Juan de Cervantes mediated between the Council Fathers in Basel and the Pope, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, later Pius II , was his private secretary.
