Giorgio Fieschi (also Georgius Fliscus ; * towards the end of the 14th century in Genoa ; † October 11, 1461 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Live and act

Giorgio Fieschi came from the family of the Counts of Lavagna and was the son of Ettore Fieschi, Lord of Savignone, and his wife Bartolomea Fieschi from Canneto. The family came from two popes, Innocent IV and Hadrian V , as well as a number of cardinals. Giorgio Fieschi studied ecclesiastical and secular law in Bologna and obtained a licentiate in 1428 . After that he was canon of the cathedral chapter of Genoa .

On May 27, 1433 Giorgio Fieschi was elected bishop of the Corsican diocese of Mariana , on May 10, 1434 the papal confirmation took place. The episcopal ordination donated to him on February 27, 1435 in Florence Cristoforo de San Marcello , Bishop of Cervia ; Co- consecrators were Gabriele Jacobi , Bishop of Modon , and Gabriele Benveduto , Bishop of Fossombrone . On October 3, 1436, Giorgio Fieschi became Archbishop of Genoa , a position he held until he was cardinal.

In the consistory of December 18, 1439, Giorgio Fieschi was appointed cardinal priest by Pope Eugene IV , the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Sant'Anastasia were awarded to him on January 8, 1440. On April 12 of the same year he arrived in Florence to take part in the council . His presence in Florence is documented for October 24, 1442. On August 8, 1443, he traveled to Siena . On September 9, 1446, he traveled from Rome to Genoa and returned to Rome on February 21, 1447. Giorgio Fieschi participated in the 1447 conclave that elected Nicholas V Pope. In 1447 he was chamberlain to the Holy College of Cardinals . On March 5, 1449 he was raised to cardinal bishop and received the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina . On April 22, 1449 he traveled to Genoa and stayed away from the city of Rome for six months. He was the papal legate of Nicholas V in Liguria and took part in the secret consistory of October 27, 1451. He was also a participant in the conclave of 1455 , through which Calixt III. got on the chair Petri. On April 28, 1455 Giorgio Fieschi was elected dean of the Holy College of Cardinals and moved to the suburbicarian bishopric of Ostia and Velletri, which was intended for the cardinal dean . As cardinal dean he headed the conclave in 1458, from which Pius II emerged as pope.

Giorgio Fieschi died in Rome on October 11, 1461. His body was transferred to Genoa and buried in the local cathedral of San Lorenzo .
