Jules Déchin

Jules Déchin (born November 12, 1869 in Lille , France , † July 23, 1947 in Paris ) was a French sculptor . He was mainly known for his war memorials and large sculptures .

Déchin initially studied in his hometown of Lille. At the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris he was a student of Jules Cavelier and Henri Chapu . In 1898 he received the Prix Jean-Baptiste Wicar of the city of Lille; a scholarship that enabled him to study in Rome for four years . After training in Italy, he created numerous works for clients in France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, the USA and Russia.

In 1899 the sculptor Louis Noël adopted him in place of his son. Déchin died in his Paris home in 1947 and was buried next to his stepfather in the Montrouge cemetery.

Jules Déchin made numerous memorials in memory of the fallen of the First World War with the title Monument aux morts de la Première Guerre mondiale , which in France among others in Aumont-Aubrac (1919), Chaulnes (1920), Framerville-Rainecourt (1926), Guemps (1920), Gueudecourt (1929), Lezennes (1920), Merlimont (1922), Ploumagoar (1923) and Roye (1927).

Other works exhibited in France are the monument to General Louis Faidherbe in Bapaume (1929), the Monument à Jeanne d'Arc , Cours Xavier-Arnauzan in Bordeaux (there since 1950), the Monument au Maire André , Lille (1908), the Monument du statuaire Eugène Guillaume , Montbard (1911), as well as the Monument à la Gloire de la Division Barbot , Souchez 1937. In the Palais des beaux-arts de Lille there are marble statues Jean-Baptiste Wicar (1900) and Philippe-Laurent Roland as well as the Marble bust de femme and the bronze statue of Jeanne d'Arc .

In Washington, DC , United States , a statue of Déchin has been on the tomb of Thomas Trueman Goff in Rock Creek Cemetery, Rock Creek Church Road, NW Section L, Lot 139 since 1922. In Canada , his statue équestre de Jeanne d'Arc was erected in 1931 in Parc de Sillery Québec in Sillery , district of Québec , Province of Québec . In the Netherlands , the statue of Le Sacré-Cœur de Jésus has stood at the Sint-Matthiaserk , Grotestraat in Oploo (today Sint Anthonis ) since 1930 .

Honors

Déchin received a Médaille de 1ère classe for his two meter high sculpture Philippe-Laurent Roland .
