Julia Draganović (* 1963 in Hamburg ) is a German curator and cultural manager . One focus of her work is the German-Italian cultural relations. Since July 2019 she has been head of the Deutsche Akademie Rome Villa Massimo in Rome .

Education

Draganović studied German , art history , philosophy and Romance studies ( Italian studies ) at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . In 1995 she was there with the dissertation of figurative writing. Doctorate on the representational implementation of Weltanschauung in Jünger's narrative work .

Curator and cultural manager

Draganović founded the “Kulturbüro LaRete” in Weimar in 1999 as an association of freelance cultural managers . From 1999 to 2003 she curated a double exhibition every year in nearby Ettersburg Castle .

In Weimar, she was president and board member of the German-Italian Society of Thuringia (DIGIT eV). As a consultant for European affairs at the Thuringian Ministry of Justice and European Affairs, she was responsible for the presentation of Weimar as European Capital of Culture 1999 in Brussels . She designed and organized the cultural events of the European Summer Academy for the Bauhaus University Weimar . From 1999 to 2003 she also headed the international scholarship program of the ACC Galerie Weimar .

From 2005 to 2006 Draganović was the artistic director of the Chelsea Art Museum in New York . From 2009 to 2014 she was active as a curator for Art Miami .

In 2004 she founded the curator collective, cultural network and follow-up project of the joint Weimar cultural office, “LaRete Art Projects” in Modena, together with the curator Claudia Löffelholz. From 2009 to 2013 she developed and curated the International Award for Participatory Art in Bologna.

From 2007 to 2009 she worked as artistic director of the PAN Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli in Italy. From 2010 to 2012 she was the curator of “Art First” in Bologna , the projects in the public urban space of the Arte Fiera art fair .

From 2009 to 2015 she was a member of the Scientific Committee of the MUDAM (Musée d'Art Moderne du Grand-Duc Jean) in Luxembourg . She has been a member of the board of the New York nonprofit organization "No Longer Empty" since 2009. Draganović has been President of the International Curators' Conference IKT, founded in 1973 with the help of Harald Szeemann , since 2014 .

From 2013 to 2019 Draganović was the director of the Kunsthalle Osnabrück , where she focused on performances . She ended this engagement to take over the management of Villa Massimo. It is important for Draganović to establish the Villa Massimo as a model for open temporary communities, for which nationality does not play a role. Artists who do not necessarily have a German passport, but have already found recognition in their art sector and live in Germany, can apply for the Rome Prize of Villa Massimo.
