Life

Justus Carrière was the son of Moritz Philipp Carrière and Agnes Liebig (1829–1862), a daughter of the chemist Justus von Liebig . After graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1873 , he studied zoology , anatomy and physiology in Munich . In 1880 he received his doctorate there with a thesis on regeneration phenomena in snails . He then moved to Strasbourg where he worked as an assistant at the zoological institute. He was a private lecturer and taught from 1885 as an associate professor of zoology at the University of Strasbourg . In 1883 he married Sophie von Hofmann, a daughter of Karl von Hofmann and Cornelia Kekulé.

Carrière's most important achievements include his investigations into the foot of mussels and the visual organs of various invertebrates . His main work is a comparative anatomy of the visual organs of all animal species published in 1885 . In 1887 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Justus Carrière was a member of the Corps Palatia Bonn and the German Zoological Society . He died of diphtheria in 1893 at the age of 39 after a brief illness . In 1895 Carrière's collection of autographs , which formed the basis for the book with the correspondence between Justus von Liebig and Jöns Jakob Berzelius , published shortly before his death , became the property of the Bavarian Court and State Library .

Justus Carrière is the grandfather of Bern Carrière and the great-grandfather of Mathieu Carrière , Till Carrière and Mareike Carrière .
