k-os (2004)

k-os : (* (pronounced "chaos") on February 20 1972 as Kevin Brereton in Toronto ) is a Canadian hip-hop musician. His stage name is also an acronym for " K nowledge o f S elf".

Life

Kevin (also "Kheaven") Brereton grew up together with his eight years younger brother Joshua as the son of Trinidadian parents in Toronto. The fact that his parents were Jehovah's Witnesses shaped his youth . Today he lives according to the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti . At the age of eight, Kevin decided to become a vegetarian .

He moved to Trinidad with his parents around ten, but returned to Canada with his mother four years later, where they lived in Whitby . In 1992 he attended Carleton University for one semester in Ottawa . He then moved to York University in Toronto, but broke off his studies there when his first single "Musical Essence" was released in 1993.

With the release of his second single "Rise Like the Sun" in 1996, k-os received an offer from BMG . Nevertheless, shortly afterwards he announced that he wanted to withdraw from the music business.
Only in 1999 he tried with several demo tapes in various again record companies to apply. Capitol Records offered him a contract that same year. There, minor disputes and problems caused the owner EMI Group to transfer k-os to the subsidiary label Astralwerk , in which Virgin Records also holds shares. There he released his debut album Exit in 2002 . He chose the title because the album should also be his last.

Nevertheless, the successor Joyful Rebellion was released in 2004 , which mixed a wide variety of music styles, while the predecessor still sounded more like a mixture of alternative hip-hop and reggae . In 2006, the title "The Love Song" from the album was used in a commercial for the mobile phone company Vodafone .
In the same year, k-os' third album Atlantis: Hymns for Disco was released. On this he appeared for the first time mainly as a singer and experimented with rock 'n' roll in addition to the previous styles . Like his previous works, it was largely criticized very positively.

In April 2009 the album Yes! , which was announced as SouL On Ice at the beginning of 2008 . In 2013, K-os' fifth studio album Black on Blonde followed .
