Karasburg (until 1939 Kalkfontein ) is a municipality and district town of the Karasburg-Ost constituency in the region in southern Namibia , not far from the border with South Africa .
Karasburg has about 4300 inhabitants and an area of 39.9 km².
The Karas Mountains are north of Karasburg . The district is a breeding area for Karakul sheep , and there are game farms to visit.
history
Karasburg was founded as a settlement by the Bondelswart , in 1898 the area was bought by the British and in 1909 by the Germans, the latter also built a train station for the Lüderitz railway (with a connection to Upington ) here. During the First World War , the railway line driven by South Africa crossed the border of what was then German South West Africa here . Since then Karasburg has been a rail border crossing point. It was not until 1929 that Karasburg became a village; a parish on October 15, 1947 .
Infrastructure
Karasburg has various educational and clinical facilities, a gas station open 24 hours a day, a car repair shop, a hotel, various fast-food restaurants , a bank branch and the Karasburg airport . Karasburg is the current terminus of the Windhoek – Nakop railway line .
The place has a soccer stadium, the home of the Namibian first division club Young Brazilians .
