The Sogn Roc Chapel is a baroque Roman Catholic church building in the village of Lumbrein , municipality of Lumnezia , Surselva region , Canton of Graubünden , Switzerland .

Building history

The baroque chapel was built between 1628 and 1630. At that time, a plague epidemic raged in Graubünden . The chapel was consecrated on June 23, 1630, but the associated plague cemetery was never occupied because the epidemic had subsided. Renovations took place in 1895, 1965 (integral) and 1997 (exterior).

Exterior

The chapel, dedicated to the plague saint St. Rochus , is located in an isolated location in the south of the village and is surrounded by a small plague cemetery with a striking gate. The outwardly simple, west-facing hall church with a polygonal choir is crowned by a roof turret with an onion helmet, in which there are two bells from 1624 and 1627.

inner space

The short nave (3.9 m long and 3.8 m wide) and the slightly recessed choir (2.9 m long and 2.8 m wide) are arched and set off by the choir arch , a step and a knee-high choir screen. The chapel is only lit by a segmented arched window in the east wall of the nave and choir, as well as by a small oculus window above the door in the north wall.

High altar

The magnificent high altar consists of elements from different centuries. The stone Mensa comes from 1885. A striking, created around 1720 frames of silver-plated and gilded conversation narrowness of acanthus and - volutes holds an altarpiece. The painting made in 1630 by Hans Jacob Greiter from Bressanone in the late Renaissance style shows the center of Saint Mary with the baby Jesus , flanked by the plague saints Rochus (right, with dog and plague wound and healing angel) and Sebastian (right, as a martyr pierced by arrows ) .

Late Nazarene painting

The colorful and partly gilded painting consisting of inscriptions, ornaments and paintings in the style of the late Nazarene or the neo-Renaissance from the years 1895 and 1896 is unusual. The painting takes up the architectural elements of the chapel and emphasizes them even more. The three paintings in the nave form a cycle of the Holy Family (a popular motif among the Nazarenes). The painting on the west nave wall is with Jos Traub , the ceiling painting with Traub. Signed Rorschach - it should be the painter Josef Traub (1860–1934) from Rorschach .

  • Painting in the ship front right: Nativity with Mary kneeling, Joseph of Nazareth standing and praying and four angels at the manger, the stone pillars of the stable indicated in the background.
  • Painting in the rear right of the ship: Flight of the Holy Family to Egypt with Mary and Jesus on the donkey in front of a southern landscape.
  • Painting in the back left of the ship: Saint Joseph dying, surrounded by Mary and Jesus in front of an arcade with curtains leading to the open air.
  • Painting on the choir wall: Portrait of Antonius Magnus with a brown monk's robe, Bible and cross staff in a wide forest and rocky landscape.
  • Painting on the ceiling ship: In an oval cartridge is Chapel Patron Roch before a romantic shown woodland. A kneeling angel heals his plague wound on his leg, while a dog brings Rochus bread. In contrast to the altar from 1630, which shows Rochus as a gray-bearded old man, he is shown as a young adult in the painting from 1895.
  • Medallions between the stabbing caps: The six medallions, executed in grisaille technique, show episodes from Rochus' vita : The praying pilgrim Rochus in the forest, Rochus heals plague sufferers on the way to Rome, Rochus heals a bishop, a dog brings Rochus bread, Rochus receives the communion in Pestgefängnis of Piacenza , Rochus dies in prison.
  • Apostle inscriptions: Four angels are painted on the choir arch wall and on the back wall. A coat of arms with a consecration cross and an apostle's name are added to each . The other apostle names with crosses are located in rectangular cartouches in the nave and on the choir walls.
  • Choir arch inscription : In Latin above the choir arch: Anno MDCXXX Die XXXIII Junii Sacellum Hoc In Honorem San Rochi C. Conscratum Est / A Celsmo Ed Revdsmo D. Josepho Mohr SRE Principe Eppo Curiensis. / Eius Dedicatio Celbratur Dominica Anta Navitatem S. Iohannis Bapstae. The inscription commemorates the inauguration of the chapel by the Chur bishop Joseph Mohr von Zernez . On the back wall above the entrance it says Renovatio AD 1895 in much smaller letters .
