Karen De Pastel

Karen De Pastel (born June 27, 1949 in Bellingham , USA ) is an American- Austrian university professor , pianist , organist , violinist , conductor and composer .

Life

Karen De Pastel started taking singing and violin lessons from her mother, who was a violin virtuoso , from the age of six . From 1964 to 1967 she studied piano with Berthe Poncy Jacobson and violin with Emanuel Zetlin at the University of Washington in Seattle and won several first prizes in competitions in the USA for piano, violin and viola.

After graduating from high school, she moved to Austria and continued her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. She took piano, song and instrumental accompaniment with Richard Hauser , Franz Holetschek and Robert Schollum , violin with Eva Braun-Prix , composition with Friedrich Neumann and organ with Rudolf Scholz . She received her diplomas for piano (1972), composition (1975) and organ (1982) with distinction; she also passed the state examination for violin in 1973 with distinction.

In 1972 she made her debut as a composer at the Vienna Konzerthaus and played the solo part of her work "Konzertante for Violin and Orchestra". In 1975 she was hired by Abbot Norbert Mussbacher as titular monastery organist at the Stiftsbasilika Lilienfeld ( Lower Austria ), where she has since organized international organ, choir and instrumental concert cycles. In 1979 she made her debut as an organist in the Wiener Konzerthaus with works by Johann Sebastian Bach and in 1982 she founded the Lilienfeld Summer Academy , which she has been directing ever since.

De Pastel has been a lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 1985 . In 1987 she graduated as a Magistra artium . In 1993 she held an international organ and harpsichord competition in Lilienfeld.

Since 2001 she has been leading organ masterclasses in Plovdiv and Sofia and in 2002 she founded the Wienerwald Orgelfest, which she has directed ever since.

Her concert activities and worldwide radio and television appearances with international orchestras have taken her to various countries in Europe, Asia and the USA, her compositions are regularly performed by important artists in the Musikvereinssaal Vienna and internationally and are with the music publishers Doblinger , Aurophon , Goldgruber , Wiener Waldhornverein , Triglav-Wien and NÖ Musikedition published. Record, CD and video recordings complement her musical work.
