Carl Krause (also Carl Friedrich Theodor Krause and Karl Friedrich Theodor Krause ; * December 15, 1797 in Hanover ; † June 8, 1868 ibid) was a German physician and director of the Senior Medical College in the Kingdom of Hanover.

Life

Krause was the son of the later rector of the city high school in Hanover and superintendent Johann Christian Heinrich Krause and great-grandson of Dorothea Christiane Erxleben . He grew up in Idensen , where his father was a pastor at the time, and received a classical education from him (he also had to oversee the parish's agriculture). From 1812 he attended high school in Hanover, where he was already doing anatomical studies and continued as a student at the military hospital under Georg Wedemeyer from 1814. In 1815 he became an underwriting doctor in the Hanoverian army , took part in the campaign and the battle of Waterloo and worked as a doctor in the military hospitals after the battle in Brussels and Antwerp. From 1816 he studied medicine in Göttingen, where he was Konrad Johann Martin Langenbeck's special assistant . Other of his teachers were Johann Friedrich Blumenbach , Karl Himly and Friedrich Benjamin Osiander . In 1819 he received his doctorate (dissertation: On the function of the thymus) and then settled as a general practitioner in Hanover. During this time he published medical articles. In 1821 he took over the management of the public vaccination facility and in 1822 he became a country surgeon for the Hanover district. In 1827 he became a country physician and in 1853 a senior court physician. In 1820 he became a prosector at the surgical school in Hanover (which existed until 1851), gave lectures on surgery and special therapy and became professor of anatomy and physiology there in 1829. Soon afterwards he married the daughter of the court medic Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Heine (d. 1833), who had also promoted him until then and was his teacher. After his reputation was strengthened by various publications and his anatomy textbook, he received appointments, among others, to Dorpat and Tübingen and in 1851 to a professorship for anatomy in Göttingen as successor to Langenbeck. He was kept in Hanover by making him head of the Obermedicinal-Collegium (1852).

In 1838 he became a member of the Leopoldina . The painter Carl Oesterley created an oil painting of the doctor in 1847 .

His son Wilhelm Krause was also an anatomist. Otto Kohlrausch was one of Krause's students .
