Karl Hillenbrand

Karl Hillenbrand (born June 8, 1950 in Ochsenfurt ; † November 22, 2014 in Würzburg ) was Vicar General of the Diocese of Würzburg .

Life

Karl Hillenbrand was a boarding school student at the Würzburg Kilianeum . After graduating from the Riemenschneider-Gymnasium in 1970 , he studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau . He received in 1974 by Josef Stangl , the diaconate and on 10 October 1976 in the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola in Campo Marzio in Rome by Cardinal Joseph Hoffner , the ordination . In 1982 he received his doctorate in theology with a christological dissertation at the Gregoriana . He was active in pastoral care in Leidersbach , Erlach , Riedenberg , Oberbach and a chaplain in Schweinfurt . From 1983 to 1996 Hillenbrand Regens was at the seminary in Würzburg . From 1983 he was also chairman of the Bavarian Regent Conference, from 1992 chairman of the German Regent Conference.

Bishop Paul-Werner Scheele appointed him Vicar General of the Diocese of Würzburg in 1996 and thus successor to Heribert Brander . In addition, on December 1, 1996, he took over the role of rector of the Würzburg Marienkapelle . From 1997 to 2004 he was also media officer for the diocese. In 1999 he was appointed cathedral chapter . After the bishop's retirement in 2003 and appointment as permanent representative of the diocesan administrator , the new bishop Friedhelm Hofmann reappointed him as his vicar general in 2004. Since 2002 he has been a member of the association committee of the Association of Dioceses of Germany (VDD) and has been its deputy chairman since 2004. In 2002 he was significantly involved in the work of the newly established "Media Coordination Commission" in the VDD.

Hillenbrand was chairman of the board of trustees of the episcopal foundation “Together for Life” and was committed to women in need and their children. He was also known as a radio, fasting and festival preacher. He has published several theological books and essays. His last work, "Spiritual People - Human Clergy", on the future of priestly formation, attracted national attention. Hillenbrand acted as an expert in the formation of priests in the Synod of Bishops in 1990 and in the Synod of Europe in 1999.

Hillenbrand died suddenly and unexpectedly in his apartment on the night of November 21-22, 2014. On November 29th, around 2000 people took part in the Requiem in Würzburg's Kilians Cathedral and accompanied him to his final resting place in the cloister of the cathedral.
