At his first pastor in Wielkie Hajduki , he met the priest Jozef Czempiel , a great preacher and witness to the faith (born September 21, 1883, † May 19, 1942 in Dachau concentration camp ). He was beatified on June 13, 1999 by Pope John Paul II together with 107 martyrs of Nazi persecution . On the way back from a vacation in the Tyrolean mountains, Ignacy Jeż stopped in Dachau without knowing that his priestly friend was martyred here a few days ago . When he got home to know about it, he celebrated a requiem for him . Observed by the Gestapo , he was arrested, interrogated in the prison in Katowice and Breslau, and later interned in the Dachau concentration camp . With the prisoner number - 37196 -, a white ribbon and a red triangle with the letter P, he lived with his confreres until he was liberated by the Americans on April 29, 1945 . After a stay near Göppingen , he returned to his homeland.

After a short stay in his parish, he was given catechism training. Having escaped the Nazi rulers, he now had to face the clashes between the church and the communist state .

He was ordained bishop on June 5, 1960 by Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski , Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw . Pope Paul VI appointed him bishop of the Koszalin-Kołobrzeg diocese in 1972 . On June 28, 1972, he was solemnly introduced into his cathedral church and took possession of his new diocese.

On February 1, 1992, his resignation at the age of 77 was granted by Pope John Paul II .

Act

Ignacy Jeż was one of the pioneers of German-Polish friendship. He was the first Polish bishop who, together with the Würzburg church journalist Helmut Holzapfel , who for his part was a tireless pioneer of German-Polish understanding, appointed a German priest as Dome of Honor in the chapter of the re-established or newly founded Diocese of Koszalin.

He has received several awards for his extensive work. He was an honorary canon in Würzburg, received the second highest Polish order Polonia Restituta , the Grand Cross of the "Order of the Rebirth of Poland".

In 2005 he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by Federal President Horst Köhler .

In 2006 he was honored in the Jakob Kaiser House of the German Bundestag in Berlin with the price for moral courage “for his courageous behavior as a young priest during the Nazi occupation in Poland”.

At the request of the children, he received the international award as Cavalier of the Order of Smiles .

Pope Benedict XVI announced on October 17, 2007, when the new cardinals were announced , that he also wanted to appoint Jeż, who had died the day before, probably as a result of a heart attack.
