Karl Kayser (actor)

Karl Kayser (born May 14, 1914 in Leipzig ; † January 27, 1995 there ) was a German actor , director and artistic director . He was a member of the People's Chamber and a member of the Central Committee of the SED .

Life

Kayser was the son of a worker. After attending elementary and advanced school, he completed an apprenticeship as a painter in Leipzig from 1928 to 1932. He was a member of the Socialist Workers' Youth (SAJ). In 1932/33 he completed an apprenticeship as an actor and was also a trainee at the Schauspielhaus Leipzig. According to the information in the SED cadre file, he was a member of the two Nazi organizations, the German Labor Front and the Reich Theater Chamber . In 1933/34 he got an engagement at the Staatstheater Stuttgart , 1934 to 1936 at the Staatstheater Oldenburg , 1936/37 at the Stadttheater Halle and 1937/38 at the Stadttheater Plauen . In 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and after the end of the war was an American prisoner of war until 1946.

In 1946 he joined the SED. From 1946 to 1950 he was an actor and director in Leipzig, where he co-founded the Theater der Junge Welt . From 1947 to 1950 he was chairman of the trade union management of the Städtische Bühnen Leipzig. In 1950 he became the first chairman of the Kulturbund (DKB) of the Erfurt district and in 1952 was a member of the Thuringian state parliament for the Kulturbund and a member of the Erfurt district assembly from 1952 to 1954. From 1950 to 1958 he was general director of the National Theater in Weimar . In 1958, Kayser moved to Leipzig and became general manager of the Leipzig City Theater and remained so until 1990. His inaugural production was Scholochow's new territory under the plow . One of his most important productions was the performance of Faust I and Faust II at the [Schauspielhaus] in 1965.

As a member of the DKB parliamentary group, Kayser was a member of the People's Chamber from 1954 to 1990 and was a member of the SED's central committee from 1963 to 1989 . From 1977 to 1989 he was a member of the culture commission at the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED . From 1965 to 1991 he was a full member of the German Academy of the Arts in the GDR. He also held office as Vice President of the Association of Theater Professionals in the GDR and from 1975 to 1989 he was President of the GDR Center of the International Theater Institute .

Awards

In 1952, 1959 and 1966 Kayser was a collective national prize winner . In 1974 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit , in 1979 the Karl Marx Order , and in 1984 the Medal of Honor for the Patriotic Order of Merit. In 1985 he received an honorary doctorate from the Karl Marx University in Leipzig .
