Karl Ludwig Friedrich Josef von Brandenstein (born August 14, 1760 in Engelberg in Württemberg , † June 13, 1847 in Oldenburg (Oldb) ) was a Grand Ducal Oldenburg politician , most recently chairman of the Oldenburg State Ministry .

Life

Brandenstein came from the Hessian noble family von Brandenstein . He attended high school in Stuttgart and studied law at the universities of Tübingen and Göttingen from 1776 to 1781 . After an internship at the Imperial Court of Justice in Wetzlar , he entered the court service of Duke Friedrich August von Oldenburg as a chamberlain in May 1782 , but switched to state administration a year later. In July 1783 he was appointed assessor at the government chancellery in Oldenburg and promoted to the real government council in March 1786 . From 1792 he officiated as bailiff in Delmenhorst , but ended this activity in 1811 when the French Empire annexed the country. During this time he also took on two diplomatic missions to Stockholm (1800) and The Hague (1807). Brandenstein's activities during the French occupation are not known, apparently he continued to work in the administrative service and published legal writings.

After Peter Friedrich Ludwig's return from exile in Russia , Brandenstein became a member of the provisional government commission in December 1813, which acted as the provisional central authority for the Duchy of Oldenburg . After the reorganization of the authorities in 1814/15, on October 12, 1814, he was given the role of leading minister in the Oldenburg cabinet ministry , whose area of responsibility included foreign policy . At the same time, under the name of " Oberlanddrost ", he was appointed to the board of directors of the government college and thus also head of administration for the Oldenburg region and head of the government, one of the three middle authorities in the Grand Duchy. In September 1814 Peter I appointed him acting president of the Oldenburg Higher Appeal Court , which he headed until 1821. As in 1821, the Heads of State and Cabinet Ministry was created as the supreme authority, Brandenstein was appointed on July 23, 1821 Privy Council and appointed Minister of State and got the in the allocation of family and the Foreign Ministry , the Cabinet expedition that Kontrasignation and Sportelwesen . In addition, he remained chairman of the government of the Oldenburg region until 1829. Brandenstein, who was characterized as being of average talent and hardworking, was, in spite of his many offices, only an executive assistant to Peter I, who wanted to govern himself and, especially after 1813, surrounded himself with docile officials who did not exceed mediocrity. Because of old age complaints and increasing hearing loss, Brandenstein did not take part in the cabinet meetings since 1833, but formally remained the sole cabinet minister until June 30, 1842 and continued to prepare legal reports. Günther von Berg succeeded him in this office. On May 8, 1832 , Grand Duke August I had a commemorative medal minted for him on his 50th anniversary in service . Brandenstein died in Oldenburg in 1847. In his will, he donated a third of his considerable fortune for charitable purposes, among other things for the establishment of the “Insane Asylum in Wehnen”, today's Karl Jaspers Clinic .

The (not very extensive) estate is in the Lower Saxony State Archives , Oldenburg Department .
