Karl du Jarrys Freiherr von La Roche (born March 2, 1811 in Bruchsal , † August 13, 1881 in Karlsruhe ) was a lieutenant general and historian from Baden .

Life

origin

La Roche comes from a French aristocratic family known since the 14th century who were wealthy in the Limousin and Anjou . The family came to Baden and Bavaria via Liège and the Electoral Palatinate . He was the son of the Chamberlain of the Baden Hereditary Princess Amalie von Baden , Franz Amour du Jarrys Freiherr von La Roche. His cousin was Franziska du Jarrys von La Roche (1809–1848), wife of the Bavarian State Minister Alexander von Feilitzsch (1803–1873) and mother of the Bavarian Interior Minister Maximilian von Feilitzsch (1834–1913).

Military career

Coming from the Cadet Corps , La Roche was transferred to the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Baden Army on October 17, 1828 as a Second Lieutenant . Transferred to the Leib Infantry Regiment in mid-June 1832, he became Premier Lieutenant here on June 2, 1835 and served as a regimental adjutant until 1842. In 1842 he became a captain in the 2nd Infantry Regiment. La Roche published military instructions and works on war history. In 1844 he came back to the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment, with which he was involved in the battle for Staufen in 1848 . In 1852 he became a major , in 1855 a lieutenant colonel and in 1860 a colonel and commander of the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment. In 1865 he was promoted to major general and commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade. La Roche took part in the 1866 war against Prussia as a brigade commander in the Baden division in the Main Campaign and led his large unit in the unfortunate battle near Hundheim . In 1868 he was promoted to Lieutenant General and received the Commander's Cross 1st Class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion with Swords for his services . At the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 he was entrusted with the leadership of the Baden division and took part with it in the siege of Strasbourg . However, La Roche had to say goodbye during the siege for health reasons.

family

In 1838 he married Elvira Jägerschmidt (* January 13, 1813 - January 18, 1858), with whom he had the following children:

  • Elvira Caroline Ernestine (born November 10, 1838 - † January 6, 1860)
  • Max Karl August Heinrich (* August 15, 1841; † July 28, 1916), Prussian Lieutenant Colonel ∞ Freiin Helene von Bodenhausen (* May 9, 1854)

In his second marriage, he married Freiin Mathilde von Adelsheim on September 6, 1859 (born June 11, 1836). From this marriage a daughter was born:

  • Mathilde Amalie Ernerstine Maximiliane (born August 17, 1866 - † September 3, 1943) ∞ Karl von Grolman (born April 26, 1862 - † September 3, 1890)
