Karl von Briesen

Karl Philipp Traugott von Briesen (born November 22, 1765 in Wirschkowitz, Militsch district , † November 21, 1834 in Minden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Karl was a son of the Prussian salt factor and heir to Wirschkowitz and Wengeln Georg von Briesen (1723–1787) and his wife Johanna, born von Rothkirch (1732–1812) from the Braunau family.

Military career

Briesen joined the cuirassier regiment "von Arnim" of the Prussian army in 1780 as an Estandartenjunker and at the beginning of December 1782 advanced to the cornet . Since his family could not support him for economic reasons, he received 100 thalers from the Prussian King Friedrich II for his officer equipment. On August 25, 1789 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and took part in the battle in front of Warsaw and in the occupation of Radon in 1794/95 during the campaign in Poland . For Radon, Briesen received the order Pour le Mérite on November 24, 1794 and on December 23, 1795 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant. By mid-November 1799 he was promoted to Rittmeister . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the skirmishes near Königsberg and Gollau and then took part in the retreat across the Memel .

After the Treaty of Tilsit , he was promoted to major on March 17, 1807 , and appointed squadron chief on May 6, 1807 . On November 25, 1807 he came to the 1st Silesian Cuirassier Regiment , was appointed regiment commander on May 27, 1813 and promoted to lieutenant colonel in mid-July 1813 . During the Wars of Liberation , Briesen fought near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Laon and Paris as well as the sieges of Thionville and Longwy. In addition to both classes of the Iron Cross, he received the Order of St. Anna II. Class, was wounded at Haynau and promoted to colonel on January 1, 1814 .

On March 23, 1815 he was brigade commander ad interim at the VI. Army Corps and on April 10, 1816 appointed inspector of the Arnsberg Landwehr Inspection. In mid-May 1816 Briesen received permission to wear the uniform of the Silesian Cuirassier Regiment, was promoted to major general on March 30, 1817 with a patent from April 1, 1817 , and was appointed commander of the 14th Landwehr Brigade on February 22, 1820. This was followed on March 30, 1827 as a commander of Minden . Briesen was on March 27, 1831 Lieutenant General with a pension of 2700 thalers adopted . After his departure, King Friedrich Wilhelm III awarded him . on April 10, 1831 the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. He died in Minden on November 21, 1834.

In his assessment from 1811, his commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ferdinand von Lessel, wrote: "Excellent moral character and knowledge as required by a staff officer who is suitable for a higher post."

Briesen married on August 30, 1796 in Krappitz Eleonore Tschulke (1770-1834), the eldest daughter of the mayor of Krappitz Georg Friedrich Tschulke. The couple had several children:
