Karl von Kettler
Karl Friedrich Freiherr von Kettler (born July 17, 1812 at Haus Brüggen , † September 18, 1893 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .
Life
origin
Karl von Kettler was the son of Christian Adolf Karl Friedrich Wilhelm von Kettler (1761–1828) and his wife Gerhardine Luise, née Baare (1780–1861). His father was a captain . D. , most recently in the “von Schenck” infantry regiment as well as Herr auf Bruges and Gerkendael. The later Prussian major general Wilhelm Adolf Heinrich von Kettler (1818–1874) was his younger brother.
Military career
Kettler visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin. He was then employed on August 14, 1830 as a second lieutenant in the 13th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army in Münster . After various commands, Kettler advanced to captain and company commander in mid-December 1848 . On April 16, 1857, he was transferred as a major to the 17th Infantry Regiment , in which he commanded the fusilier battalion from December 1, 1858. In 1863 he was ordered to head the 1st Posen Infantry Regiment No. 18 in Frankfurt (Oder) .
In 1864, during the campaign against Denmark , Kettler was involved in the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen and subsequently received the order Pour le Mérite .
In the following years he was involved in the war against Austria in 1866 in the 1st Army under Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia . After the peace treaty he was promoted to command of the 8th Infantry Brigade in Bromberg on October 30, 1866, and was promoted to major general on December 31, 1866 in this position. Kettler led his brigade in the war against France in the fighting near Gravelotte and Champigny and the sieges of Metz and Paris in 1870/71 . With 4,000 infantry, 12 guns and 260 horsemen, he was sent against Garibaldi to Dijon , where he made two unsuccessful attempts to take the city. After heavy losses, Kettler limited himself to observing the enemy until reinforcements under General Hann von Weyhern arrived. After their arrival Garibaldi vacated the city. Winner of both classes of the Iron Cross Kettler was due to illness after the war ended on April 22, 1871 the character as a lieutenant general for disposition made.

Kettler married Hedwig Maria Uken (1810–1864) on October 5, 1864 in Münster. The marriage had two children:
