Karl von Massenbach

Karl Christoph Wilhelm von Massenbach (born May 7, 1752 in Radmannshöfen, Königsberg district in Prussia , † August 10, 1821 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and division commander of the Landwehr .

Life

His parents were Karl Wilhelm von Massenbach (1714–1761) and his wife Marie Helene, née von Negelein († 1764).

Military career

Massenbach had on 13 February 1767 a student at the University of Konigsberg enrolled, but went in 1769 as a corporal corporal in the Dragoons' old Platen " the Prussian army . There he was promoted to secondary lieutenant until the beginning of September 1773 and took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 . After the war, on June 9, 1785, he became lieutenant prime minister and on April 4, 1790, captain of the staff . As such he fought in the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 . On March 2, 1795 he was then promoted to major , on October 23, 1800 squadron chief and on May 29, 1806 then lieutenant colonel . Massenbach also fought in the Fourth Coalition War .

After the Treaty of Tilsit , he was appointed a member of the Military Reorganization Commission on July 25, 1807 , and on December 16, 1807, Massenbach received an allowance of 300 thalers. He rose to colonel on March 13, 1808 and was appointed commander of the 2nd West Prussian Dragoon Regiment on October 4, 1808 , but remained a member of the Military Reorganization Commission. On December 5, 1809 he went with King Friedrich Wilhelm III. to Berlin. On January 16, 1810, he was appointed a member of the Immediate Investigation Commission , where he is to investigate the events relating to the cavalry. Major Leopold von Bülzingslöwen led his regiment at this time. But on December 15, 1810, Massenbach received his resignation with the character of major general and a pension of 800 thalers. For his services, Massenbach received the order Pour le Mérite on November 25, 1811 . In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , he was reinstated as a division commander of the Landwehr on March 18, 1813 . During the war he fought in the Battle of Dennewitz . In 1814, however, Massenbach was made inactive again. He died on August 10, 1821 in Berlin and was buried in the cemetery at Halleschen Tor .

Before joining the military, he studied in Königsberg and, as an officer, attended the lectures at the ecole militaire with great benefit. He has done a lot in all sciences, in particular acquired a lot of mathematical and tactical knowledge, he draws very well and should also be able to take good situation plans. His good moral character, his good manners, his knowledge in all branches of science make him useful in every subject and worthy of the remark of His Majesty the King. "

Massenbach married Charlotte de Genée (1758-1851) on August 3, 1787. The couple had several children:
