Prince Karl Ferdinand Wilhelm zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich , also Carl zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich (born June 27, 1866 in Lich ; † July 26, 1920 ibid) was a German politician . He was President of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Life path

School time and studies

Karl was the eldest son of Prince Hermann zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich (1838–1899) and his wife, Countess Agnes zu Stolberg-Wernigerode (1842–1904). Attended high school in Kassel , then studied at Leipzig University . After attending university, he was in the military. He traveled to Italy and Algeria .

Marriage and offspring

He married in the Oct. 16, 1894 Wernigerode Princess Emma (1875 to 1956), the daughter of Prince Otto of Stolberg-Wernigerode . From this marriage there were four children:

Since his only son Philipp was killed in World War I in 1918 , his brother Reinhard Ludwig (1867–1951) took over the post of head of the house after Karl's death in 1920 .

politics

Karl zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich took over the state rule with the death of his father Hermann Fürst zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich in 1899 . As a Hessian nobleman he was constitutionally member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1899 to the November Revolution 1918 . In the First Chamber he was Vice-President from 1908 to 1914 and President from 1914 to 1918. From 1901 to 1918 he was also a member of the Prussian manor house .
