Karlheinz Smieszek

Karlheinz Smieszek (born August 5, 1948 in Kitzingen ) is a former German sports shooter.

Smieszek comes from Salzgitter and is an insurance salesman. He was a member of the Braunschweiger Schützengesellschaft and took part in a world championship for the first time in 1974.

In preparation for the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, he also trained in a greenhouse to get used to the high temperatures of the St. Lawrence River.

During the competition with the 50 m small bore rifle in Montreal , he initially struggled with the difficult wind conditions at the L'Acadie shooting range, but after the test shots he cope with the situation better and better, so that with 599 rings he became Olympic champion in front of his teammate Ulrich Lind and also set the world record. For this achievement he was honored by being awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf,

Smieszek was also in the German Olympic team in 1980, but could not participate due to the boycott of the Games in Moscow .
