Edward Frederick "Ed" Etzel Junior (born September 6, 1952 in New Haven , Connecticut ) is a retired American marksman and professor of psychology at West Virginia University .

Sporting successes

Edward Etzel was founded in 1978 in Seoul with the small-bore rifle team three positions champion . He took part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles with the small bore rifle in the competitions in the prone position at 50 m and in the three-position fight. In the latter he finished in shared 15th place with 1142 points. In the horizontal position he set the Olympic record of 599 points, so that he won the gold medal before Michel Bury and Michael Sullivan and became Olympic champion . During his career he won eleven national titles. From 1974 to 1976 he was an officer in the US Army at Fort Benning , for which he was also active in shooting. From 1976 to 1989 he worked as a shooting coach at West Virginia University .

academic career

Etzel made initially in 1974 with a degree in biology at Tennessee Technological Institute , before a 1979 master's degree in Physical Education graduated from West Virginia University. After his Olympic victory in 1984, he began his doctorate in psychological counseling at Duke University , before graduating in 1989 with a Doctor of Education at West Virginia University. He later also worked on this as a professor in the sports science department .
