The Chartreuse de Montrieux ( Cartusia Montis Rivi ; Charterhouse of Montrieux) is a monastery of the contemplative Carthusian order in the commune of Méounes-lès-Montrieux in the Var department in France. The complex is partly classified as a monument historique , partly registered as such.

history

The Charterhouse was founded in 1137 as the eighth house of the Carthusian Order. After the great plague epidemic of 1348, the monastery was repopulated by Gherardo Petrarca, the brother of the poet Francesco Petrarca , who had settled here in 1342. The facility was destroyed several times; the current building stock dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Carthusian monastery was abandoned during the French Revolution , but was settled again by the Carthusians in 1843. In 1905 they left the monastery again due to secular legislation, but moved into it again around 1930 and are still there today.
