Metástasis (Spanish for " Metastase (n)" from ancient Greek μετάστασις , "migration"), proper spelling MetAsTasis , is a Spanish-language remake of the successful drama series Breaking Bad . The Colombian - US co-production aired in the US, Colombia and some other Central and South American countries from 2014. The main roles are Diego Trujillo as Walter Blanco ( Walter White ) and Roberto Urbina as José Miguel Rosas ( Jesse Pinkman ). The remake, specially designed for the Latin and Hispanic American market, is based heavily on the series original, which caused a lack of understanding among many fans of Breaking Bad .
action
The chemistry teacher Walter Blanco receives a lung cancer diagnosis and starts preparing crystal meth together with his ex-student José Miguel Rosas .
The screenplay is based strictly on the AMC -Originalserie Breaking Bad and rarely deviates from the template. Even the names of the main characters are deliberately reminiscent of the original (see cast ). The action is set in and around the Colombian capital Bogotá .
production
After Univision had already announced a remake, Sony Pictures Television and the Colombian production company Teleset confirmed on May 13, 2013 a remake of Breaking Bad under the title Metástasis . Sony TV Vice Rector Angelica Guerra justified this decision with the universality of the story and its characters as well as the high potential for the Latin American market. Breaking Bad does not reach high audience numbers in Central and South America, which is largely due to the lack of distribution of cable television . In addition, a high-quality production with a large budget, spectacular locations and a top-class cast was promised.
At Sony's behest, the original series was reproduced almost word for word. There are different statements as to whether Vince Gilligan , creator of the original series, was available to the creators as a guide. By the time filming began in Bogotá , Breaking Bad had already won numerous awards and, contrary to Angelica Guerra's claims, was also very popular in Latin America. Even the first published production photo, which shows Walter Blanco standing in the wilderness in underpants, suggested that the remake would be very close to the original. Andy Baiz and Andrés Biermann directed the film.
occupation
The roles were cast exclusively by actors from Latin America, predominantly from the production country Colombia. All figures with at least five appearances (including flashbacks) are listed.
backgrounds
The remake is true to the original recreation of Breaking Bad , so that the differences in content are largely limited. In some points, however, the remake was adapted for the Latin American market.
- The Spanish title Metástasis refers to Walter Blancos cancer.
- The series logo differs in terms of the chemical elements highlighted . While in Breaking Bad the element symbols Br ( bromine ) and Ba ( barium ) come to the fore, in Metástasis it is As ( arsenic ) and Ta ( tantalum ). All four elements play no role in the synthesis of methamphetamine.
- The action has been moved from Albuquerque , New Mexico to Bogotá , Colombia .
- The names of the characters have been redesigned with a view to the Spanish-speaking area. Cielo , the first name of Walter's wife means heaven and is therefore based on the original name Skyler . Other examples are Saúl Bueno (originally Saul Goodman ) or Edgar and Marcela Negro (Elliott and Gretchen Schwartz) .
- Some of the originally Mexican characters kept their names, such as Héctor and Tuco Salamanca, Andrea Cantillo and Carmen Molina.
- Walter's pseudonym “Heisenberg” remains the same in Metástasis .
- Most of the dialogues were translated literally, such as the much-cited “I am the one who knocks” (“¡Yo soy el peligro!”) And “Say my name” (“¡Diga mi nombre!”). Jesse Pinkman's catchphrase "Yeah, bitch", however, was not adopted.
- The mobile home (original: RV ), in which the two protagonists initially cook meth, was replaced in Metástasis by a discarded school bus. The background to this is the extensive lack of mobile homes in Colombia.
- Lawyer Saúl Bueno has his own talk show on television ("Cuéntele a Saúl"), while Saul Goodman has to be content with cheap commercials in Breaking Bad .
- Instead of a freight train (see Breaking Bad / Season 5 ), two trucks are robbed in the remake.
- The song Negro y Azul , which originally introduced an episode of the second season , has been replaced by Vals de Jaisenber , a Colombian composition. The fictional band that performs the song is called Cuates de la Roca .
- Unlike the original, Blancos don't have a swimming pool behind their house.
- Henry Navarro, the Colombian version of DEA agent Hank Schrader, is an employee of the Policía Nacional de Colombia .
- The members of the White Power -speed to Jack Welker include in metastasis of a right-wing extremist - paramilitary to grouping.
- The type of pest control shown in the fifth season of Breaking Bad is not common in Colombia. For this reason, Walter and José cook in dilapidated houses that are waiting to be demolished.
- In contrast to Jesse Pinkman, who is estranged from his family, José Miguel Rosas is adopted .
- Thanks to the easier production of cocaine , methamphetamine is not widely used in Colombia. That is why there is a scene in Metástasis in which Henry Navarro explains to Cielo Blanco what the drug is about.
- Walter Blanco is hiding in the Colombian Andes from the series' final showdown , while Walter White goes into hiding in New Hampshire .
- While Walter White teaches at a public high school, Walter Blanco teaches at a private school . In most Latin American countries, private schools are more affordable than in the US and are generally more attended.
Charisma
Metástasis was first broadcast in the USA on June 8, 2014 - a good eight months after the last Breaking Bad episode - on UniMás . In Colombia, the broadcast started on January 13, 2015 on Caracol Televisión . Unlike the American original, the broadcast took place Monday to Friday in the style of a telenovela . The entire series could be broadcast within just three and a half months. The final was broadcast on September 18, 2014 on UniMás and on April 13, 2015 on Caracol TV.
The series was sold to many Latin American markets, including Mexico (Canal 5), Guatemala (Canal 3), Puerto Rico ( Univision ), El Salvador (Canal 6) and the Dominican Republic (Telemicro). The series can be seen online on Hulu and, since June 2015, on Netflix , where the original series is also available. English subtitles are also available on Netflix .
reception
Even before the series aired, Metástasis provided plenty of topics to talk about. In particular, the extreme similarities to the template earned a lot of ridicule in the online community. For example, the British web portal SQ described the series as the “worst show in TV history” only because of the premise. In the New York Times , however, it was said that as a Breaking Bad fan you are well aware that the remake is a weaker version, but at the same time so busy comparing the two (" Halo effect ") that hardly There is time to bother with the routine, but thoroughly competent cinematography . On the other hand, the lack of subtitles for the Anglo-American viewer was criticized. Laura Martínez wrote for the Spanish-language edition of CNET that she was skeptical at first, but that her mind changed after seeing the show. Although not the first Latin American adaptation of a US series, Metástasis is the first to be shot with such care.
In Colombia too, the audience initially reacted with little euphoria to the announcement of a breaking bad remake. Lead actor Diego Trujillo said there was a "cultural shame" in his home country when it came to filming US series, mainly due to the poor quality of the remakes. The most difficult thing about the implementation of Metástasis was the moral complexity of the matter, and the soap opera star Trujillo also stated that she had never embodied a “multidimensional” figure like Walter Blanco. Actor Roberto Urbina said the show was designed for those who don't know Breaking Bad . As a big fan of the original series, he added that fans of the American original could hardly avoid comparing the two series and criticizing the remake.
«Metástasis es una adaptación que tiene su propia identidad, no se trata de que sea una copia. El objetivo es tomar una historia y volverla propia. La realidad suburbana de Albuquerque es muy diferente a la de Bogotá, lo que le da unos tintes distintos a la serie. "
“Metástasis is an adaptation with its own identity, not just a copy. The goal is to take a story and make it your own. The reality in the suburbs of Albuquerque is very different from that in Bogotá, which gives the series a different hue. "
The Colombian website El Parcero particularly praised the portrayals of Trujillo and Constanza Camelo as María Navarro ( Marie Schrader ). Overall, the remake was viewed favorably and summed up with the rhetorical question “Metástasis, ¿Un cáncer benigno?” (“Metástasis, a benign cancer?”). In Colombia, the series was even able to win several awards, including Frank Ramírez posthumously received a Premio India Catalina for his role as Héctor Salamanca. In the IMDb film database , the series received an average rating of 3.3 out of 10 points based on over 900 reviews.
In August 2016, Walter White actor Bryan Cranston announced that he had never seen Metástasis . He also has no idea how the remake of Breaking Bad is different. The same was true for Skyler actress Anna Gunn , who admitted that she had never heard of her Colombian counterpart Sandra Reyes . However, she expressed interest in seeing their performance one day.
