Life

Early years

Vince Gilligan was born on February 10, 1967 at MCV Hospital in Richmond , Virginia . His mother, Gail Gilligan, b. Lambert has taught reading as an elementary school teacher and has been a reading specialist at several schools, primarily in Farmville . Gilligan's father, George Gilligan Sr., was a claims appraiser for various insurance companies.

Vince Gilligan lived in Richmond for about three years until the family moved to Farmville because of his father's work, where Gilligan grew up with his four years younger brother Patrick Gilligan. Gilligan was gifted at an early age, so he could speak in clear, complete sentences by the age of two. In the vicinity of Farmville he attended the Cumberland Elementary School . In 1974 Gilligan's parents divorced and he and his brother lived with their mother. At Longwood University's JP Winn Campus School in Farmville, where his mother taught, he developed a keen interest in film and television and the desire to work in the film business. Gilligan's art teacher Jackie Wall, the mother of his best friend Angus Wall , lent them a Super 8 camera and encouraged them to express themselves on film. During his high school years, Gilligan's family moved to Chesterfield County . From 1981 to 1982 Gilligan attended the Interlochen Arts Academy , an arts boarding school in Michigan where Gilligan studied metalworking and fine arts . Since money was tight, he could only attend this high school for one year. Until 1985 he then attended LC Bird High School . His parents, who are now retired and divorced, still live in the area today.

Career

Gilligan studied at New York University's film school , the Tisch School of the Arts , and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a degree in film production . During his studies he wrote the screenplay for the film Verliebt in Sally , for which he received the Virginia Governor's Screenwriting Award in 1989 shortly after graduating . Nine years later, this film was made into a film with Drew Barrymore and Luke Wilson . At this award ceremony, the film producer and Oscar winner Mark Johnson , who sat on the jury, became aware of Gilligan. Johnson became a kind of mentor for Gilligan, from 2008 to 2013 the two produced the series Breaking Bad .

In 1993, a film was first released for which Gilligan wrote the script: the comedy The Thing with Fire, starring Debra Winger and Dennis Quaid .

In 1994, Gilligan wrote a freelance screenplay for the X-Files mystery series, which aired on Fox . Six months later he became staff writer for the series and wrote the script for a total of 29 episodes. From the third season (1995-1996) Gilligan was listed on the X-Files as a creative consultant . He also directed two episodes of the series . In total, he was involved in more than 140 episodes of the X-Files series from 1995 to 2002 . When Gilligan became a producer on the X-Files in 1997, Gilligan signed a multi-year contract with Fox to develop new television series for the film production company Ten Thirteen directed by Chris Carter , the inventor of the X-Files . For this reason, he worked as a consulting producer on Carter's Harsh Realm and developed a 13-episode spin-off series of the X-Files with Carter, John Shiban and Frank Spotnitz , which was produced in 2001 under the title The Lone Gunmen . Gilligan became executive producer and wrote the script for three episodes of the series. In 2003 the series appeared in Germany under the title Die einsamen Schützen .

In 2006 he wrote the screenplay for the film Pulse with Wes Craven, among others - You are dead before you die . In 2007, Gilligan rewrote the screenplay for the film Hancock, written by Vincent Ngo in 1996 . The film, starring Will Smith, was a formidable financial success with revenues of $ 620 million on a budget of $ 160 million. In addition, Gilligan was executive producer and screenwriter for the series pilot A.MPED in 2007 , but the series was never ordered and the pilot was therefore not published.
