El Camino: A "Breaking Bad" movie (Original title: El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie ) is an American film that was written and directed by Vince Gilligan . He continues the plot from the series Breaking Bad (2008-2013). The film was released on Netflix on October 11, 2019 .
action
The film begins with a flashback in which Jesse Pinkman and Mike Ehrmantraut discuss their exit from the methamphetamine empire of Walter White by a river . Mike advises Jesse to go into hiding in Alaska . The film then follows on from the final events of the series Breaking Bad : Jesse and Todd Alquist's El Camino escape from the White Supremacy Gang's property before the police arrive. At first he finds shelter with his old friends Skinny Pete and Badger . The next morning, Jesse tries to make the El Camino disappear with the help of the junkyard owner Old Joe . However, he discovers that the car is equipped with a tracking system and that the police are probably already on their way to them. In Badgers Pontiac Fiero , Jesse continues on his way while the police search for him as the only survivor of the massacre initiated by Walter.
Jesse is reminded of his imprisonment in a barred bare concrete dungeon on Uncle Jack's estate, who forced him to cook meth. In a flashback, Todd takes Jesse back to his apartment to make the body of his cleaning lady disappear. This had found Todd's hiding place in his apartment, whereupon she was strangled by Todd. Todd tells Jesse that he now needs to find another place to hide his money. But he still wants to keep it close by. The two then drive into the desert and bury the woman. In the present, Jesse hears the confirmation on the radio that Walter White has died and that Lydia Rodarte-Quayle, poisoned by White, most likely has no chance of survival. He goes to Todd's apartment to look for the new money hiding place. The apartment has already been searched by the police. He spends all night looking for the money but can't find it. It was only by chance that he discovered the money hiding in the refrigerator door. Just as he tries to take the money out, two alleged police officers, Neil and Casey, come into the apartment to ransack it again. Jesse hides, but is discovered by the two. Since the two claim that there are a lot more police officers waiting downstairs, Jesse surrenders and is tied up by the two of them. Through their amateurish demeanor, Jesse realizes that Neil and Casey are not cops. He offers to show them where Todd's money is hidden if it is shared fairly. He is released for this and actually gets a third of the money from the fridge. On the street, he realizes that the alleged police officers are employees of the Kandy Welding welding company who built his cuffs and cage in hiding.
With the money, Jesse sets out to find Ed Galbraith, vacuum cleaner salesman, who had already provided Walter White and Saul Goodman with new identities. However, Jesse is short of $ 1,800 for his service, and he sets off to get the missing money. After finding two handguns in a break-in in his parents' house, he makes his way to the welding company. Here he confronts Neil, Casey and the rest of the staff that he urgently needs $ 1,800. Neil notices that Jesse is wearing a gun in his waistband and challenges him to a duel . Jesse agrees and shoots Neil with the revolver from his parents' house, which he hidden in his jacket pocket, and Casey, who opens fire on him after Neil's death. Jesse leaves the other three men alive. Then he blows up the building.
Another flashback shows Jesse and Walter having breakfast in a hotel after the first meth cooking in the desert with the mobile home. They discuss selling the drugs, and Jesse assures Walter that his family will receive the money whether or not he survives his illness. Walter suggests Jesse before then that he did the college visit and business should study and marketing. He congratulates Jesse on being so young and not having to wait all his life to do something special.
Back in the present, Jesse pays the vacuum cleaner salesman Ed, who then smuggles him into Alaska. Jesse hands Ed a farewell letter to Brock. When Jesse drives off in the car to start his new life, Jane takes one last look back. Jesse tells her that he admires the way she is always drifting with the universe. Jane replies that sometimes it is better to make your own decisions. Then the review ends. You see Jesse driving alone through Alaska smiling, hoping for a better life.
production
In November 2018 there were first rumors of a film sequel with Aaron Paul in his role as Jesse Pinkman. Paul said Vince Gilligan reached out to him in 2017 about Breaking Bad's 10th anniversary plans and pointed out something big. Paul vowed that he would be dearly interested in Gilligan continuing Jesse's character. In an interview in November 2018, Bryan Cranston , who played Walter White, confirmed that a film was indeed in the works, but he had not seen a script. Cranston also stated that he would be interested in appearing in the film. Two other well-known Breaking Bad characters were then confirmed for El Camino, Jesse's friends Skinny Pete and Badger. In total, over ten returnees from the original series appear in the film.
Mike actor Jonathan Banks confirmed in an interview at the end of September 2019 in a whisper that he would be part of the film's sequel and added with a wink: “ You will hit me on the head for saying that, but yes, why not? Neither of these guys hits very hard anyway. "
The shooting took place in November 2018 in Albuquerque , New Mexico, under the working title Greenbrier . By the time local media made a link between Greenbrier and Breaking Bad , filming was largely complete, according to Paul. Actor Bob Odenkirk stated in August 2019: “I've heard so many different things about it, but I'm looking forward to the Breaking Bad movie. I can't wait to see it. ”Regarding the secrecy of the film, he said,“ I don't know what people know and what not. I find it hard to believe that they don't know it was filmed. [...] Is that a secret? But it is. They did an amazing job keeping it a secret. "
In February 2019, it was reported that a Netflix and AMC breaking bad film was in the works. Netflix then announced the movie on August 24, 2019 as El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie . The title refers to the Chevrolet El Camino with which Jesse escaped at the end of the final Breaking Bad episode after being rescued and rescued by the dying Walter. The film was released on Netflix on October 11, 2019. On the same day, Ed Galbraith actor Robert Forster died of a brain tumor in Los Angeles. The film will later be broadcast on AMC.

reception
Tobias Kniebe sums up in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that the creator of Breaking Bad , Vince Gilligan, “simply put one of his best series episodes on the back burner six years late with this film. It feels like not a day has passed since then - and that says everything about the power of this great American tale. " El Camino feels" exactly right. "
Wolfgang Höbel ( Spiegel Online ) is happy about a "sentimental, but also nerve-wracking reunion with the always sunlit and sometimes brain-burned gangster world of the crystal meth brewers of New Mexico." Basically, the film hardly tells any other story in 120 minutes legendary 1960s television series Dr. Kimble on the run . However, Jesse, unlike Kimble, has charged heavy guilt - and you can see that in him. “Scars furrow his back and face. The actor Aaron Paul exudes a nice calm in this hero role, and in the course of the film he seems not only to recover physically from his injuries, but also to cope with his past mentally. "
In his review in the Guardian , Paul MacInnes notes that the film's title is actually misleading: “ El Camino (Spanish for street or path ) is not the story of a man who fled the city. Rather, it's about someone trapped - not just in New Mexico, but also in their head, captivated by the trauma they just went through and the memories that help them finally figure out where to go next . “ El Camino is giving the character Jesse Pinkman a degree. “But while El Camino has both style and content, it feels more like a full-length TV episode than an actual movie. It's too compact and fragmented to stand on its own, and viewers who haven't seen Breaking Bad in the past 62 hours will likely have trouble enjoying it. "
Carolin Ströbele appears in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit disappointed with the “slack arc of tension”: “The longer Jesse's escape goes on, the more obvious the script's weaknesses become. [...] After the series has ended, there are no more suitable sparring partners for Jesse. It's all dead. ”Vincent Gilligan may have intended to retrospectively strengthen Jesse's character with the sequel, to fan him out further. But he gives it too little space for that, wasting too much time with classic action sequences. “ So now Breaking Bad has ended a second time. The end [...] doesn't exactly call for another sequel. It is interesting that two of the most successful series of the past decades - Breaking Bad and Transparent - have just ended their era with a feature film. If you wanted to get dramatic, you could see it as a sign of fatigue in serial storytelling. But this short epilogue, which El Camino now represents, was probably just the safer way for Gilligan to continue telling the story of Breaking Bad without taking the risk of damaging his series work.
