The second generation Chevrolet El Camino is a Chevrolet vehicle based on the Chevrolet Chevelle , which was built from 1963 to 1967. It is the remake of the original El Camino that GM produced from 1959 to 1960. Like this, the second generation El Camino is a pickup truck with the body shape of a coupé. Around 137,000 vehicles were built during the four-year construction period.
technical description
The El Camino is a two or three-seater pick-up truck that is built on a ladder frame . The body is mounted on these as a complete unit, the front end, driver's cab and loading area are not structurally separated, but merge seamlessly into one another like a coupé. The El Camino is driven - depending on the model - by an in-line six-cylinder or V8 gasoline engine, which is coupled as standard to a manually shifted, partially synchronized three-speed gearbox.
landing gear
A flat ladder frame, cranked in the area of the axes, carries the El Camino. It has a cross strut in the rear and on the axles. The frame is narrower in the area of the front axle support. The front wheels are individually suspended on double wishbones, the rear axle is a rigid axle. All wheels are sprung with coil springs and have hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers. The maximum permissible axle load on the front axle is 862 kg (1900 lbs ), that of the rear axle is 1225 kg (2700 lbs). The wheelbase is 2921 mm (115 in).
The El Camino has 7.00-14-4PR tires on 356 mm (14 in) diameter rims. The braking system is a hydraulic servo braking system that acts on drum brakes on all four wheels. The total braking area is 1475 cm 2 (228.6 in 2 ). As a standard, the brake lining contains asbestos and is glued; a welded sintered metal brake lining was also available on request. It is steered with a recirculating ball steering system without power assistance.
body
The El Camino has a non-self-supporting body: it is attached to the ladder frame as a complete unit. The body is two-door, with two seats in the interior. Up to the B-pillar the shape corresponds to a coupé, from the B-pillar an open loading area follows. The greatest length of the loading area is 1994 mm (78.5 in), the greatest width 1646 mm (64.8 in). The fuel tank has a volume of 75.7 dm 3 (20 US. Liq. Gal. )
Engines
Four different gasoline engines were offered for the El Camino, two R6 and two V8 engines, the two V8 engines were available with different carburettors in two or three power levels. This resulted in seven possible gross performance levels from 120 bhp to 365 bhp. All engines are triple bearings and were given model names, the following models could be delivered; Despite the name in Turbo , none of the engines is charged:

The engines are water-cooled and wet sump lubricated, they have a cylinder block made of cast iron, and the material of the cylinder heads is also cast iron. The crankshaft is made of nodular cast iron, the camshaft is at the bottom and is driven by spur gears. It actuates two hanging valves per cylinder. The pistons, which are designed as flat pistons, are made of cast aluminum; they transmit the force to the crankshaft via drop-forged connecting rods. A Rochester-type single falling-flow carburetor is installed for the mixture preparation.

The pistons, which are designed as flat pistons, are made of cast aluminum (with the exception of the 365 bhp version: cold-pressed aluminum pistons with a curved bottom); they transmit the power to the crankshaft via drop-forged connecting rods. Depending on the model, either a Rochester 2G double falling-flow carburetor or a Rochester 4G quadruple falling-flow carburetor is installed for mixture preparation.

Gearbox and power transmission
Three basic transmissions were offered for the El Camino, a partially synchronized manual transmission, an overdrive transmission and a two-stage converter transmission. All manual transmissions are separated from the engine with a conventional single-disk diaphragm spring clutch . The diameter of the couplings is 231.78 mm (9.125 in), 254 mm (10 in) and 264.32 mm (10.41 in), respectively. The couplings are designed for a maximum torque of 319 N · m (235 lbf · ft), (smallest coupling), or 382 N · m (282 lbf · ft), (from 254 mm). The engine torque is transmitted from the transmission to the rear wheels via a cardan shaft and the Salisbury Chevrolet differential gear. The gear ratio is 3.36: 1 or 3.08: 1, with the overdrive gearbox 3.7: 1.
- Manual transmission
The manual gearbox was manufactured by Chevrolet and is the standard gearbox for the El Camino, it has three forward gears as standard, of which the second and third forward gears are synchronized and a non-synchronized reverse gear. All gears are made of hardened forged steel and have helical teeth. The same type of transmission was also available for the V8 engines with four forward gears, all of which are synchronized. Approx. 946 cm 3 (2 US liq. Pt. ) Of gear oil are required for operation, and approx . 1183 cm 3 (2.5 US liq. Pt.) For the four-speed transmission . Only the V8 engines could be combined with the four-speed version; the four-speed gearbox was the only option for the most powerful V8 engine with 365 bhp.
- Overdrive gear
The overdrive gearbox corresponds to the conventional three-speed gearbox with a flanged three-pinion planetary gearbox. It must be switched on manually. The overdrive ratio is 0.7: 1. 1420 cm 3 (3 US liq. Pt.) Of gear fluid must be added. Only the R6 engines and the 283 V8 engine were available in combination with the overdrive gearbox.
- Converter transmission
The converter transmission works fully automatically and has two forward speeds and one reverse gear. With the exception of the most powerful versions of the small (283-) and large (327-) V8 engine, the converter transmission was available for all engine versions.
