The Kasseler Hütte ( Italian: Rifugio Roma alla Vedrette di Ries ) - also Hochgallhütte - is a refuge in the Rieserferner group in South Tyrol ( Italy ). It is located at 2276 m slm
Location and approach
The Hochgallhütte is located on the north side of the Rieserferner main ridge high above the Bachertal, which flows into the Reintal at Rein in Taufers and into the Tauferer Tal at Sand in Taufers . Like the entire surrounding area, it is located in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park .
The easiest approach to the hut is from the Bachertal on the south side through larch forests, past the Ternerhütte ( 1874 m ), a waterfall and the Eppacheralm ( 2041 m ), in about two hours. From Antholz the hut is much more tedious and difficult to reach via the Antholzer Scharte ( 2814 m ) or the Schwarze Scharte ( 2981 m ).
history
The first building at this point was built in 1877 by the Taufers section of the DuÖAV . The simple accommodation hut for self-catering for a total of 30 people was then called "Rieserfernerhütte", today's Rieserfernerhütte is located in the Gemsbichljoch, south of the snowy Nock .
On April 1, 1887, the Kassel Alpine Club Section was founded; it now took a year for the board to look around for a suitable building site in the Rieserferner group . In the summer of 1894 - according to the chronicle "after agreement with the Tauferern" - the construction of the hut began.
The inauguration took place on July 24, 1895. She had 17 beds. In the following year, the Kassel Section and the Taufers Section agreed to rename the property “Kasseler Hütte”. Around 1910 mountain guides and porters used the hut as a night camp. The hut remained closed during the First World War . In August 1926, the Kasseler Hütte, previously expropriated by the Italian state, was handed over to the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) and its Rome section was awarded; this changed the name of the hut to "Rifugio Vedrette Giganti", but the Italians used the simpler term "Rifugio Roma". In the local population, however, the rooted term, which is commonly referred to as “Kassla hut”, was retained. Certainly also because the Kassel section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club had repeatedly supported the population of Reiner financially. The Kassel section built the Kasseler Hütte of the same name in the Austrian Zillertal in 1927 to replace it .
The era of the legendary Seeber tenant family began in the summer of 1959. Ernst Seeber first managed the Kasseler Hütte until 1964. After that, the hut remained closed until 1970 because of the South Tyrolean attacks . From 1970 Ernst Seeber was again at the hut with his wife. The legendary hut owner died on December 8th, 1992 - only 60 years old. Since then his youngest son Arnold Seeber and his wife Silvia have been running the refuge.
Together with 24 other shelters expropriated by the state, the Kasseler Hütte became the property of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol in 1999; At the end of 2010, the license for their management by the CAI expired. Since 2015, the state of South Tyrol has been supported in the management of the hut (assignment to tenants, supervision of management, renovation measures) by a joint commission, in which the AVS and CAI are represented in addition to the public sector .
