Katie Mitchell (born September 23, 1964 in Reading , England ) is a British theater , film and opera director .

life and work

Mitchell grew up in the Hermitage in Berkshire and studied English literature at Oxford . After various assistants, u. a. at the Royal Shakespeare Company , she founded her own theater company called Classics on a Shoestring in the late 1980s . From 1996 to 1998 she was in-house director at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), then for four years at the Royal Court Theater . In 1997 she took over the program responsibility for The Other Place, a studio stage of the RSC. Mitchell has been directing at the Royal National Theater in London since 1994, and has also worked as an opera director since 1996.

The artist achieved her international breakthrough in 2009, when she staged James MacMillan at the Salzburg Festival Luigi Nono and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen with her staging of the concert at the Schauspiel Köln . Mitchell is working closely with the writers Martin Crimp and Duncan Macmillan , the video designer Leo Warner , as well as the stage and costume designers Lizzie Clachan , Sussie Juhlin-Wallén and Vicki Mortimer together.
