Kazimierz Urbanik (born February 5, 1930 in Krzemieniec , † May 29, 2005 in Breslau ) was a Polish mathematician .

Life

In 1948 Urbanik passed the Matura exam and enrolled at the University of Breslau in mathematics and physics. In 1952 he graduated and was employed as a faculty member, and in 1956 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on cascade processes . In 1957 he completed his habilitation. In 1958, Urbanik produced important works on generalized stochastic processes . In 1965 he became the youngest member of the Polish Academy of Sciences . 1967–1978 he became director of the Mathematical Institute of the University of Wroclaw and from 1975 to 1981 rector of the University of Wroclaw. From 1981 to 1996 he was again Director of the Mathematical Institute of the University of Wroclaw, and from 1984 to 1986 Vice President of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Between 1980 and 2005 Urbanik was editor and chief editor of the journal Probability and Mathematical Statistics (PMS), which he founded .

Urbanik was an important representative of the Polish School of Mathematicians . He made important contributions to topology (mathematics) , general algebra , information theory , quantum mechanics and statistical physics . He was a popular lecturer and gave lectures in Göttingen , Moscow , Paris , Cleveland , Berkeley , Cambridge , New Orleans , Beijing , Delhi and Hanoi , among others . He also gave several lectures at the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach .
