Briggs was named assistant captain in his senior year at the university - an honor no Golden Gophers goalkeeper has received since 1973. With the Golden Gophers, Briggs won the 2007 McNaughton Cup as the regular season winner of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , and the Broadmoor Trophy as the league play-off winner. Since leaving university, Briggs has held the records for career wins and shutouts for the Golden Gophers.
In the summer of 2007 Briggs took part in a training camp for the Iowa Stars , but then played for their partner team, the Idaho Steelheads , in the ECHL . In the following months he was one of the best goalkeepers in the league and was consequently nominated for the ECHL's All-Star Game . In January 2008 he was called to the American Hockey League for the first time to the Rockford IceHogs , because Wade Flaherty was injured. After a week he returned to the Steelheads without AHL use.
In the 2008/09 season he first played for Ontario Reign in the ECHL before he was signed by the Portland Pirates from the AHL in February 2009 . With the Pirates he played a total of seven games before he came to Europe in spring 2009 and signed a contract with the Dresdner Eislöwen .
In the summer of 2010 Briggs decided to return to the Ontario Reign and was one of the best goalkeepers in the ECHL the following season, before he was signed by the Heilbronner Falken in early January 2011 . In July 2011 he was awarded a contract for two years by the Dresdner Eislöwen, which was not extended after it expired.
