Kevin Patrick Foley (born November 1, 1984 in Luton ) is an Irish football player . As a right full-back and midfielder , the eight-time Irish international was first with his hometown club Luton Town and later with Wolverhampton Wanderers between 2002 and 2015 .

Athletic career

Club career

Foley went through the youth department of Luton Town and made his debut for the third division on October 22, 2002 in a game of the Football League Trophy against FC Woking (2-0). A total of two championship and two cup games were at the end of the 2002/03 season for the Irish talent to book, with the league debut on April 19, 2003 ended with a 2-2 draw against Bristol City . He made the move to the main player on the right side of defense in the 2003/04 season, at the end of which he made his debut against Scotland in May 2004 in the Irish U-21 national team - both parents come from Kerry . A year later he celebrated his first major success with his home club on Kenilworth Road when he was promoted to the second-rate Football League Championship . The technically well-trained defender who has good timing in defensive behavior - which means he is relatively rarely warned with yellow cards - and who prefers a clean passing game to pure liberation strokes, developed into a widely recognized talent. Foley played two years for the "Hatters" in the second division, but at the end of which was relegation to Football League One . In between he had scored his first goal for the U-21 selection in 2006 as part of the qualifying round for the U-21 European Championship against Azerbaijan .

Unsurprisingly, given the increased ambitions, Foley did not follow his old club into the third division. Rather, he moved to the ambitious second division Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 14, 2007 and signed a three-year contract there; The parties involved agreed not to disclose the amount of the transfer fee. Right away Foley found his place in the new team, missed only two league games on the right side of defense and was the player with the highest number of appearances after goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey . He presented himself as a "long-runner" in the 2008/09 promotion season and played 45 games - more than all teammates and all of them from the start. At the end of the season, his own supporters in front of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Jody Craddock named him “best player of the season” and Foley extended his contract with the “Wolves” until the end of the 2012/13 season. On his Premier League debut on August 15, 2009, he injured his knee and had to wait until December to find his place back on the team. Since players like Ronald Zubar and Richard Stearman were planned as right-backs, he moved to central or right midfield within the 4-5-1 formation. After another 2010/11 season with a total of 33 first division appearances and the tight relegation , Foley extended the contract one more time until the end of the 2014/15 season.

Shortly after the start of the following 2011/12 season, Foley had to undergo an ankle surgery. After his recovery, the year he had under the interim boss Terry Connor the descent on the Premier League to accept. The sporting crisis in the team came to a head from then on and the second relegation in a row followed . The coaches changed from Ståle Solbakken via Dean Saunders to Kenny Jackett at short intervals and Foley ultimately suffered from the rebuilding of Jackett. In February 2014 the Wolves loaned him to the second division club Blackpool FC for a month and after he was no longer used in Wolverhampton until November 2014, he went to Blackpool again until January 2015. Subsequently, Foley's contract was terminated by mutual agreement six months before the end of the term. Only a few hours later it was announced that he had been hired for six months at the Danish FC Copenhagen , where his path crossed again with that of his ex-coach Solbakken.

Irish national team

His good performances in the promotion season 2008/09 did not go unnoticed by the Irish national team . After the then coach Steve Staunton had already put him on the bench for a friendly against Chile on May 24, 2006, Foley made his debut on May 29, 2009 in a 1-1 draw against Nigeria . After successfully qualifying for Euro 2012 , coach Giovanni Trapattoni initially nominated him to the 23-man squad, but after some injury problems he was replaced at the last moment by Paul McShane . Foley was disappointed and even felt "betrayed" by Trapattoni.
