Kevin Griffiths

Kevin Griffiths (* 1978 in London ) is a British conductor and the son of the conductor Howard Griffiths and the violist Semra Griffiths.

Life

Kevin Griffiths studied violin with Igor Ozim and Giuliano Carmignola , then conducting with Colin Metters , Colin Davis and Yan Pascal Tortelier at the Royal Academy of Music in London . Other teachers included Mark Elder and David Zinman . In 2003/2004 he received a scholarship from the Aspen Music Festival and School . In 2010, out of almost 600 candidates, he won 2nd prize at the Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition. In the 2010/11 season, Griffiths was a recipient of the Melgaard Young Conductors Scheme with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment London, a leading orchestra on historical instruments . He assisted conductors such as Wladimir Jurowski , Trevor Pinnock and Simon Rattle .

Griffiths is co-founder and chief conductor of the London Steve Reich Ensemble , which makes international guest appearances and whose first CD was awarded a Diapason d'or for the cpo label . His second recording with the ensemble was released in September 2011 under the EMI Classics label.

Kevin Griffiths was artistic director and chief conductor of the Collegium Musicum Basel from 2011 to 2018 .

Griffiths has worked with numerous orchestras including the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra , the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra , the Basel Symphony Orchestra , the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra together or the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, also with artists such as James Galway , Isabelle van Keulen or Dimitri Ashkenazy .
