Khadija Mosque, Berlin

The Khadija Mosque ( Urdu مسجد خدیجہ Masjid Chadidscha ) is a mosque built by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat (AMJ) in Berlin-Heinersdorf and financed by the women's organization Lajna Imaillah . She is named after Hadīdscha bint Chuwailid , the first Muslim woman and first wife of the Prophet Mohammed .

The mosque community with around two hundred members was previously located in Berlin-Reinickendorf . The Imam was up to January 31, 2014 Abdul Basit Tariq, of the Ahmadiyya "Murrabi" (as "educators") called, having worked in Reinickendorf. Said Ahmed Arif has been the imam of the community since February 2014.

prehistory

The Ahmadiyya community had already planned its first mosque in Europe in Berlin in the 1920s. According to the wish of the second head of the community, the women of the community donated the money for the construction. The foundation stone for the mosque was laid on August 6, 1923 in the corner of Riehlstrasse and Dresselstrasse, but the building project could not be completed due to the currency crisis in Germany. “The construction costs of the mosque in Berlin were financed with donations (Chanda) from the Ahmadi women. It was for 50,000 rupees invested that have the Ahmadi women collected within three months, "said Khalifat-ul Masih II. In the khutbah Juma on 2 February 1924.

The remaining funds were invested in the construction of the Fazl Mosque in London. As part of the 100 mosque plan , the old project was revived and a mosque was planned in Berlin. The Khadija Mosque is the first mosque in east Berlin, after several mosques have already been built in west Berlin and Germany's oldest mosque is in Berlin-Wilmersdorf .

The mosque's dome is 4.5 meters high, 9 meters in diameter, and the minaret is 13 meters high. The cost of building the mosque and an outbuilding with two apartments amounted to 1.7 million euros. The mosque also has a children's playground that is open to the public .

The mosque was opened on October 16, 2008 in the presence of high-ranking guests from politics and society. Mirza Masrur Ahmad emphasized the loyalty of his parishioners to Germany and expressed the wish to the local mosque opponents: "May they learn to accept the members of the Ahmadiyya community as real German citizens." Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Thierse (SPD) welcomed the construction of the mosque as an expression of the Religious freedom in Germany. Berlin's governing mayor, Klaus Wowereit (SPD), certified her in a greeting message that she “stands for religious and cultural tolerance in our city”. Berlin's Senator for the Interior, Ehrhart Körting (SPD), commented on the new mosque: “I like it a lot more when you see people like you and me praying in a mosque. The motto should therefore be to abolish as many backyard mosques as possible and replace them with open new buildings. We need more mosques. "

The local citizens' initiative (IPAHB e.V.) called for a demonstration, which was followed by around 150 participants. At the rally, u. a. René Stadtkewitz , Hiltrud Schröter and initiative spokesman Joachim Swietlik. In a counter-demonstration under the motto “A bond for peace”, 50 participants came together, while the NPD canceled their announced demonstration.

On October 17th, 2008 the caliph gave the first Friday sermon ( Chutba ) in the mosque and six weeks later the congregation invited to the first “Open Mosque Day”, which was attended by around 500 visitors. On Monday, June 29, 2009, a publicly accessible children's playground was opened on the site of the mosque.

reception

The building permit for the construction of the mosque in Berlin-Heinersdorf was preceded by considerable protests from part of the local population since March 2006, which are still ongoing. The local citizens' initiative IPAHB e. V. criticized u. a. that not a single Ahmadi member would live in the vicinity of the planned mosque site. The building permit was granted in December 2006. In spring 2007, a dump truck burned on the mosque property. In June 2007 opponents of the mosque marched through Pankow in a demonstration. In July 2008, strangers smeared the dome of the mosque with Nazi slogans.

In view of the escalation, the citizens' initiative “Heinersdorf öffne Dich” was formed in autumn 2006 with the concern: “We take the fears of imminent changes seriously. We stand for a dialogue between the different groups in order to overcome fears and contribute to a respectful coexistence ”.

Out of neighborly interest, but also to set an example against the mistrust that parts of the population show towards the Ahmadiyya community, the Evangelical Church Congregation Alt-Pankow, the Peace Circle Pankow and the Church District started an open dialogue in 2006 and are repeating the Visited Khadija Mosque. Imam Tariq, for example, invited pastor Ruth Misselwitz and parishioners to break the fast at the end of Ramadan in September 2009 .

In February 2010, the premiere of Moschee DE , a scenic reconstruction of the history of mosques in Heinersdorf by Robert Thalheim and Kolja Mensing , took place at the Schauspielhaus Hannover .
