Buttle Church

The Buttle Church is inaugurated as the 12th century gothic - Romanesque country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It has been part of the parish (Swedish församling ) Vänge in the Diocese of Visby since the beginning of 2006 , before that it belonged to the parish of Buttle. The parish (Swedish socken ) Buttle is one of the most forested regions on Gotland.

location

The church is in the interior of Gotland, 30 km southeast of Visby and 21 km north of Hemse , 12 km south of Roma , 20 km east of Klintehamn and 13 km northwest of Ljugarn .

Church building

The church consists of an elongated, straight choir in the east, an attached sacristy in the north, a slightly larger nave and a church tower the width of the nave in the west. It has pillared sound openings and a wooden spire. The church is made of plastered limestone . It has two portals in the south, to the nave and the choir, and one in the west to the tower. All entrances have perspective frames made of hewn limestone.

history

The oldest parts are the nave and the western part of the choir, which were built in the second half of the 12th century. The tower was added at the beginning of the 13th century. In the 14th century the original apse , the foundation walls of which were found under the floor of the choir, was torn down and the choir was extended to the east and the east window still preserved with tracery was added. At the same time the sacristy was added. New large windows were added from 1882 to 1883.

inner space

The choir is covered by a brick barrel vault, which was extended to the east when the choir was rebuilt. The nave has a trapezoidal wooden roof. The tower room has a brick vault. The altar of the church dates from the 15th century. The triumphal cross dates from the 12th century. Both are well preserved and still in their original polychromy . The richly painted furniture dates from the 18th century. Most of the medieval frescoes on the walls date from the 15th century and were probably made by the Passion Master or in his workshop.

Furnishing

  • The font was made in the 13th century and has a shaft with the head of a monster and two human heads.

  • The organ was built in 1883 by Åkerman & Lund Orgelbyggeri from Stockholm . It was rebuilt in 1968 by Andreas Thulesius from Klintehamn.
