Kiriku and the Sorceress (Original title: Kirikou et la Sorcière ) is a French animated film and the first full-length film by Guinea- raised director Michel Ocelot from 1998. The film is loosely based on a West African fairy tale and was so successful that 2005 the sequel Kiriku and the Wild Animals came into being. In 2007 the musical Kiriku and Karaba followed .

action

The tiny boy Kiriku is born in a small village in the West African savannah . He speaks in the womb, is intelligent, quick-witted, can run very quickly and is a special child in every respect.

The village is tyrannized by the evil sorceress Karaba. She has already captured almost all of the men. Only women, children, an old man and Kiriku's uncle are left. The sorceress leaves nothing out to make life difficult for the villagers. She lets the nearby spring dry up, sends enchanted wooden fetishes to the village to steal jewelry and everything valuable, and tries several times to kidnap the children too. She never leaves her house herself.

The clever Kiriku is not intimidated by Karaba and can always trick the sorceress. He thwarts Karaba's kidnapping attempts and brings the spring back to bubbling. Finally, he makes the dangerous journey to his wise grandfather, who lives in the mountains behind Karaba's house. From him he learns that the sorceress herself is bewitched because bad people once thrust a thorn deep into her spine .

With a trick, Kiriku succeeds in pulling the thorn out of Karaba's back, whereupon the malice falls away from her and she becomes a normal woman again. Kiriku himself is also redeemed. A kiss from Karaba makes him grow into a tall, strong man.
