Klönschnack in Hanover is the title of a bronze sculpture by the sculptor Fidelis Bentele . The 1.5 meter high sculpture , which was erected in the center of the Hanoverian district of Kirchrode , at Großer Hillen at the corner of Tiergartenstraße , shows two women standing together in public having a “chat” . The design - including the surrounding public space- and last but not least the raising of a large part of the necessary funds were the result of the initiatives and years of preparatory work by numerous residents to beautify their cityscape . In the meantime, the "Klönschnack" has become a synonym for the center of Kirchrode: In the course of the redesign of the Hanover city railway network with barrier-free elevated platforms, however, the Klönschnackplatz has recently been subjected to considerable renovation measures.

Detailed view of the “Klönschnack” of the two ladies in the center of Kirchrode

After the local pond had long been filled in and the former Unter den Linden square with its partly listed buildings in the historic center of Kirchrode was later characterized by a mostly neglected traffic island , the Kirchrode Citizens Association, under its first chairman Jürgen Vogelsang , initiated a working group in the early 1980s , to collect ideas on how the square on the corner of Großer Hillen "[...] could be transformed into a pleasant place to stay for the citizens."

After choosing a sculpture instead of a fountain that was also being considered, a sculpture with two talking human figures should be created. As a work by the artist Fidelis Bentele - a bronze fountain with a girl and fish - that had already been set up in the private garden of the club's chairman's family, had met with general approval and had already been in contact with the sculptor, Bentele was to be assigned the desired group of figures as a commissioned work .

Even the first draft in plaster from the workshop Bentele had great resemblance to the final product, but an initially Enriched hat at one of the two women should be dropped, "This [rain] water may need to run," was one of the demands; the figures exposed to the weather should require as little subsequent care as possible. The hairstyles were also changed several times - from the strict bun to the perky page head , the fashion changed several times. Only minor requests for changes were made for other details, which the artist then worked out step by step in his various plaster designs.

The impetus for the installation of a work of art in public space was provided by a will from the childless couple Sophie and Wilhelm Lück , through which the citizens' association received 35,000 DM . But it was only through a personal letter from the chairman of the association, Vogelsang, to citizens and business people in Kirchroder - but then within a few days - about the same amount of money from 25 citizens to finance the bronze women.

On May 26, 1984, the final statue, covered with a plastic cover, was unveiled to the public on an initially provisional concrete base as part of a festive event. In his acceptance speech, Jürgen Vogelsang emphasized the meaning of the name "Klönschnack"; a reference to the remnants of the village character of Kirchrode, which was still preserved despite urban development .

In the past, the maintenance of the group of figures was essentially limited to the occasional removal of paint smears . The further development of the surrounding square, which was only changed later, was again thanks to the initiative and continuous maintenance by the Kirchrode Citizens' Association.
