Klaus Koch (theologian)

Klaus Koch (born October 4, 1926 in Sulzbach , today in Apolda ; † March 28, 2019 ) was a German , Protestant theologian and professor emeritus for the Old Testament and ancient oriental religious history at the University of Hamburg .

Life

From 1946 to 1950 Koch studied Protestant theology in Heidelberg , Bethel , Mainz and Tübingen . From 1950 to 1954 he was assistant to Gerhard von Rad in Heidelberg ; In 1953 he received his doctorate in the subject of the Old Testament. Between 1954 and 1956, Koch was a Protestant pastor in Jenaprießnitz . In 1957 he completed his habilitation with Friedrich Baumgärtel and accepted a private lectureship in Erlangen. A year later, Hans-Joachim Kraus brought him to the newly established Department of Protestant Theology at the University of Hamburg.

In 1960 Koch followed a call to the Wuppertal Church University. From 1962 he held the chair for the Old Testament and the history of ancient oriental religions in Hamburg, and in 1991 he retired. Visiting professorships took him to the USA and India.

Two of Klaus Koch's brothers were also university teachers: the Protestant theologian Traugott Koch (systematic theology) and the physician Gebhard Koch . From 1978 Klaus Koch was married to the doctor Eva-Maria Koch.

Klaus Koch's main research areas were the religious history of Israel (in contrast to an understanding of the Old Testament as " revelation ", he interpreted it from the influences of his environment) and apocalyptic (he particularly devoted himself to the Book of Daniel ).

Koch coined the term doing-doing-connection and triggered discussions about the Old Testament image of God .

Klaus Koch received an honorary doctorate from the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Rostock due to his outstanding commitment to teaching and the reconstruction of the faculty. He was a member of the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences , senior member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg and a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

His students include numerous domestic and foreign theologians and university teachers, u. a. Eckart Otto , Bernd Janowski , Martin Rösel, Gnana Robinson and Nelson Kirst.
