Friedrich Baumgartel

Friedrich Johannes Baumgärtel (born January 14, 1888 in Plauen ; † June 11, 1981 in Erlangen ) was a Protestant Old Testament scholar .

Life

Baumgärtel had studied Protestant theology in Berlin , Greifswald , Leipzig and Bonn until 1914 and in 1914 at the University of Leipzig with the work Elohim outside the Pentateuch to become Lic. Theol. PhD.

From 1916 to 1922 he worked at the theological faculty in Leipzig, until 1921 as a private lecturer , then in 1921/22 as an unscheduled, extraordinary professor of theology. His other places of activity as a full professor of Old Testament studies were the University of Rostock from 1922 to 1928 , the University of Greifswald from 1928 to 1937 , the University of Göttingen from 1937 to 1941 and the University of Erlangen from 1941 to 1956 . When he was called to Göttingen, Baumgärtel was preferred as a non-party member to the NSDAP member Hans Schmidt , which provoked the protest of the NS-Gaudozentenbundführer Artur Schürmann , against whom the dean Emanuel Hirsch prevailed. In Erlangen he was rector in the academic years 1948/49 and 1949/50 .

Positions

In his fight against the legends of the church struggle , he has been opposed to a one-sided concentration of post-war studies in favor of the Confessing Church since 1958 , because in 1933 its leaders were largely infected by the enthusiasm for the “national uprising”. Baumgärtel himself belonged to that group of Protestant theologians who advocated the “committees” and against any mixing of national and ecclesiastical issues and therefore rejected the Confessing Church. Among other things, in 1936 he criticized the eclectic , uncritical approach by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and other professing theologians to the concepts of church and people in the Old Testament, which methodologically does not differ from that of the German Christians . In this way, everyone only legitimizes their own current image of the church with recourse to the Bible.

After 1945, together with Paul Althaus , he criticized the Allied denazification policy at German universities.

His library went to the University Library of the University of Bayreuth in 1981 .
